Video: Luxury, Off-road, Why not both? Jaecoo J8 from RM179K

The flagship model for Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia has arrived, and it’s the Jaecoo J8. The new D-segment SUV has been officially launched from a starting price of RM178,800, with two variants available.

The main headline for the Jaecoo J8 is that it’s offered in a six-seater variant, which swaps the standard bench seat for two comfortable captain’s chairs in the second row.

Available in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, the latter of which offered with the six-seater configuration, the Jaecoo J8 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 249 hp and 385 Nm of torque. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Interestingly, the front-wheel drive (FWD) variant is quoted with a slightly quicker 0-100 km/h time of 8.8 seconds, while the all-wheel drive (AWD) variant completes the sprint in 9.0 seconds. Both have a top speed of 200 km/h.

Three drive modes are offered as standard: Eco, Normal, and Sport. The AWD variant adds to this list with Snow, Mud, Sand, and Off-road modes.

It also comes equipped with several off-road-oriented goodies like torque vectoring control and CDC (Continuous Damping Control) suspension—although the Jaecoo J8 will likely look more at home on the streets of a luxury suburb than on dusty dirt roads.

All of these mechanicals are packaged in an exterior that is reminiscent of other luxury SUVs in its segment. It features a large, imposing Waterfall front grille and is equipped with 20-inch turbine-styled alloy wheels, adding to the J8’s luxurious vibe.

With the launch of the Jaecoo J8 in Malaysia, the SUV now joins its cousin, the Omoda C9, in the premium D-segment market. With a consistent RM10,000 price difference between their comparable variants. If you are fortunate enough to afford the sticker price, which will earn the spot in your carpark, the futuristic-looking Omoda C9 or the more conventional Jaecoo J8?
