Perodua teases “smart mobility” for Malaysia Autoshow 2025 – production-ready EV to be shown?

Perodua has posted an unassuming poster for the upcoming Malaysia Autoshow 2025, happening from 9 to 15 May 2025 at MAEPS, Serdang. The accompanying text, reading “future ready” and “smart mobility”, alongside the silhouette of a car, does however hint at something more significant.

The car, appearing as a hatchback from the top view, could just be the next step in the national carmaker’s long slow drip of info for its first-ever fully electric (EV) model following the EMO and EMO-II concepts, potentially debuting a near-production-ready model of the car.

Earlier reports, citing Sime Group CEO Datuk Jeffri Salim Davidson speaking to NST, indicated that Perodua would begin testing its EV in June. However, it appears Perodua is now running ahead of schedule, as camouflaged prototypes sporting Perodua trade plates have been photographed undergoing testing on public roads.

Jeffri also added that Perodua’s EV is due to arrive by December 2025. This suggests that the next EMO concept – potentially called the EMO-III – could showcase details of the close-to-production model.

The EV is slated for launch with a price under RM100,000, according to Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, during the tabling of the 2025 national budget (Belanjawan 2025) in October last year.

Perodua has not disclosed the main specifications of their upcoming EV model, but based on targeted specifications revealed during KLIMS 2024, the company’s first EV model is expected to be powered by a front-mounted electric motor producing approximately 160 hp (120 kW) and 220 Nm.

The motor will draw power from a CATL-sourced 50-60 kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery pack with a targeted range of 400 km.

Other new models slated to be launched in 2025 by Perodua include a brand-new “full model change (FMC)” model, and a “minor change (MC)” facelift update. We speculate that the FMC model could be the Myvi and Bezza, while the MC facelift might be for the Perodua Ativa.

However, we will need to wait till Malaysia Autoshow 2025 to see what Perodua has in store so stay tuned to our coverage!
