There’s a “new” exciting EV that you should be excited about in Malaysia and it is the Perodua EMO-I concept car that is being previewed at Malaysia Autoshow 2024. Essentially a Perodua “Myvi EV”, the concept car shows what Perodua is capable of when it comes to electrification.
You already know the Perodua Myvi, and the EMO-I concept spruces things up with a fancy decal, fancy aero caps, and a slightly revamped interior. The headlights and taillights have also been tweaked to give the car a more futuristic appearance.

What we’re all really interested in is the electric drivetrain of the EMO-I concept. It gets a single electric motor that drives the front wheels, making 120 kW and 315 Nm. The motor is a 3-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor that is able to rev up to 10,000 rpm. The car is expected to 0-100 km/h in about 7 to 9 seconds, although not officially confirmed.
As for the battery, the Perodua EMO-I has a targeted range of 400 km from a 57.6 kWh battery pack. It is said that the battery can be charged at a maximum AC charging rate of 11 kW and a maximum DC charging rate of 50 kW. The former takes 5 hours and 15 minutes to fully charge while the latter takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to fully charge.
The EMO-I’s modifications to the existing Myvi is rather extensive with a redesigned floor that accommodates the “H” shape battery. This battery configuration has forced the EMO-I to be a four-seater as the battery runs along the centre tunnel of the car. Only a concept for the time being, this four-seater configuration won’t likely go into production as it isn’t as practical.

As for the interior, the EMO-I revamps the Myvi’s interior with a 4-seater arrangement and a special rotary gear selector. The concept car also features side-view cameras instead of side-view mirrors, an Android tablet, a modified steering wheel, and retrofitted side-camera screens.
When asked whether an affordable EV from Perodua will be coming soon, Perodua says that a real EV is expected to make its debut in 2025. The EMO-I will also be succeeded by the EMO-II and EMO-III before a production EV becomes a reality. As for the price of the production EV, Perodua is targeting to price it under the RM100k mark.
Only a concept for the time being, the Perodua Emo-I or the “Perodua Myvi EV” previews Perodua’s idea of what an affordable fully electric car should be. Perodua developed it without reliance on Toyota/Daihatsu’s existing technology, and some components were contributed by local university partners. You can check it out at Malaysia Autoshow 2024 happening from May 22nd to 26th at MAEPS, Serdang.
