GWM Wey 80 in Auto Shanghai 2025 – another luxury MPV for Malaysia?

Great Wall Motor (GWM) is showcasing the GWM Wey 80 luxury MPV, which features a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, at its booth at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025.

For context, Wey is GWM’s premium division, and the Wey 80, known as the Gaoshan (meaning “high mountain”) in China, is the division’s flagship offering.

The Wey 80 in China is offered with two wheelbase lengths, spanning 5.28 to 5.41 metres, and can be configured with six or seven seats, with prices ranging from RMB329,800 (approx. RM199k) to RMB379,800 (approx. RM229k).

The GWM Wey 80 was actually previewed in Malaysia during last year’s Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show 2024 (KLIMS 2024), with GWM Malaysia evaluating the potential for a local launch of this luxury MPV.

Moving to the Wey 80 on display at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025, its exterior adopts your typical luxury MPV styling, featuring a large front grille with design elements that flow upwards towards the headlights. The front fascia bears some resemblance to the third-generation Toyota Alphard.

The rear of the GWM Wey 80 features a pair of vertical taillights, each containing three vertical elements and are connected at the top by a full-width taillight with the Wey emblem featured prominently on the tailgate.

Stepping inside the cabin of the GWM Wey 80, you will be greeted with two zero-gravity seats upholstered in Nappa leather in the second row with your standard luxury features like heating, ventilation, massaging, leg rests and retractable small tables.

For the driver and front passenger, they too get Nappa leather upholstered seats with heating, ventilation, massage and lumbar adjustment. The front passenger seat offers six-way power adjustability, while the driver gets eight-way power adjustment.

Other interior features of the Wey 80 includes three-zone automatic climate control, soundproof glass, sunshades, privacy glass, and a 12.5 litre fridge with cooling and heating functionality.

The GWM Wey 80 boasts a suite of tech features, including dual 15.6-inch infotainment displays, a 12.3-inch driver’s digital gauge cluster complemented by a 26-inch heads-up display (HUD), and a roof-mounted 17.6-inch rear entertainment screen for passengers in the back. Audio in the Wey 80 is delivered through a 23-speaker “Coffee AI Sound” system.

Speaking of coffee, the GWM Wey 80’s infotainment system runs on GWM’s Coffee OS 3, offering features like a voice assistant, access to the Coffee app store, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and motion gesture controls. It even includes an AI assistant called “Coffee GPT”.

Both variants of the GWM Wey 80 are powered by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain featuring a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 170 hp and 245 Nm.

This engine is coupled with two electric motors, one on the front axle (109 hp and 170 Nm) and one on the rear axle (183 hp and 232 Nm), managed by a four-speed hybrid gearbox.

The GWM Wey 80’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain delivers a combined output of 458 hp (337 kW) and 644 Nm. Powering the electric motors is a ternary lithium-ion (NMC) battery pack, available in 44.28 kWh or 51.55 kWh capacities.

Equipped with the 44.28 kWh battery pack, the Wey 80 offers an electric range of 172 km (WLTC) and a combined range of 945 km (WLTC). Opting for the larger 51.55 kWh battery extends the electric range to 201 km (WLTC) and the combined range to 963 km (WLTC).

For charging, the GWM Wey 80 supports AC charging at 6.6 kW which allows a 15% to 100% recharge in 6.5 hours with the smaller battery and 7.7 hours with the larger battery. While DC fast charging speeds haven’t been specified, GWM notes a 30% to 80% recharge time of 26 minutes.

In terms of safety systems, the GWM Wey 80 is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) which are based around a 128-line laser radar, three millimetre wave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars, and 11 perception cameras.

GWM touted the ADAS features on the Wey 80 to include high-speed navigation on autopilot-assisted driving, optional city-intelligent navigation-assisted driving, and your standard ADAS features like intelligent cruise assist (ICC) and adaptive cruise control (ACC).

Given its Malaysian preview last year and the local presence of Chinese luxury MPVs like the Denza D9, XPeng X9, and Zeekr 009 at prices rivalling German marques, could GWM Malaysia introduce the Wey 80? If so, it would be the first Chinese luxury MPV offered here with a PHEV powertrain, setting it apart from its all-electric competitors.
