New MG S5 EV debuts at 2025 Bangkok motor show – ZS EV replacement?

Joining the EV party at the 46th Bangkok International Motor Show 2025 (BIMS 2025) is the all-new MG S5 EV, which is launching in Thailand in three variants.

Prices for the MG S5 EV start from THB719,900 (approx. RM94k) for the Standard Range D variant, going up to THB779,900 (approx. RM102k) for the Standard Range X, and THB899,900 (approx. RM114k) for the range-topping Long Range V.

Having made its debut in China last year as the MG ES5, the MG S5 EV is a B-segment compact crossover EV SUV on par in size with the likes of the Zeekr X, Nissan Kicks, or GAC GS3 Emzoom. It stands at 4,476mm long, 1,849mm wide, and 1,621mm tall. It’s also reportedly the replacement for the MG ZS EV, as the new-generation model is currently a hybrid only.

All three variants of the MG S5 EV in Thailand are powered by a single electric motor at the rear axle for a rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup.

For the Standard Range D and X variants, the motor produce 170 hp and 250 Nm of torque to the rear wheels, translating to a 0-100 km/h run in eight seconds flat. Juicing up the Standard Range variants is a 50 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack that keeps the MG S5 EV going for 416 km (NEDC) in pure EV range.

Meanwhile, the Long Range V variant has a more powerful electric motor rated at 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The LFP battery pack is also larger at 64 kWh for a longer EV range of 550 km (NEDC).

As far as what comes with the MG S5 EV, on the outside, the car sits on 18-inch alloy rims, LED headlight and taillights at the front and rear, a rear spoiler for added sporty flair, and roof rails. The two top two variants gain automatic folding side mirrors, automatic windscreen wipers, panoramic sunroof, and electric tailgate.

The MG S5 EV comes in four different – albeit basic – colour palettes, which are Champagne Titanium, Arctic White, Black Knight, and Andes Grey.

On the inside, standard equipment include a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, automatic climate control, ventilated rear seats, and vehicle-to-load (V2L) system. As before, some items are exclusive only to the top two variant models, which are leather steering wheel, power seats, rear seat centre armrest, and wireless charging.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) – save for the 3D surround view camera – are the same across the board, so basic ADAS features like adaptive cruise control (ACC), blind spot assist (BAS), electronic brake assis (EBA), and hill start assist system (HAS) are all included.

No word yet if the MG S5 EV will eventually make its way into Malaysia. For now, its so-called predecessor, the MG ZS EV, is currently on sale here in Malaysia starting from RM125,999.

SAIC Motor Malaysia’s MG model line-up in the country also include the MG4 EV (from RM104k), MG HS (from RM130k), and the flagship Cyberster roadster, priced at RM319,999.
