Volvo EX90 spotted in Malaysia ahead of 2025 launch – 21-inch wheels, LiDAR sensor

It seems Volvo Car Malaysia is gearing up to launch the Volvo EX90 locally, as several camouflaged units were recently spotted by an anonymous AutoBuzz.my reader, discreetly parked in an undisclosed location.

The Volvo EX90 has already been confirmed as the company’s next launch here in Malaysia, most likely within the year. With the test mules now spotted doing rounds on our soil, it appears that the launch will be happening sooner, rather than later!

Most of the car photographed here is completely covered in a white camouflage cover, there are definitely a few details that poke through the slits, including the 21-inch alloy wheels (wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres), as well as the LiDAR sensor unit mounted on top of the windscreen.

There’s also the new Thor’s Hammer pixel headlights, and a peek through the windscreen also reveals that the Volvo EX90 – at least in the variant photographed here – will also come with a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, with the centre tweeter standing tall and proud atop the dashboard.

The Volvo EX90 is built on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2) platform. Globally, the fully electric three-row SUV is offered in two all-wheel drive configurations. The lower-end Twin Motor packs 408 hp (300 kW) and 770 Nm, while the Twin Motor Performance variant raises outputs up to 517 hp (380 kW) and 910 Nm.

For the latter, the extra power translates to a 0-100 km/h sprint time in 4.9 seconds. But don’t expect to hit crazy speeds – like all Volvos, the top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.

Both variants pack a 111 kWh (107 kWh usable) nickel manganese cobalt (NC) battery pack, which translates to a 600 km (WLTP) range on the Twin Motor variant, and 590 km on the Performance.

DC charging is supported at up to 250 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in 30 minutes. As for AC, the EX90 comes with an 11 kW on-board AC charger, which requires approximately 10 hours for a full charge.

The Volvo EX90 is a larger car compared to the XC90 (which will remain on sale alongside), measuring 87 mm longer, 41 mm wider, but 29 mm lower than its ICE counterpart.

Inside, the Volvo EX90 keeps things clean and simple with a Scandinavian minimalist design. There’s a large 14.5-inch touchscreen in the centre and a slim letterbox-styled for the instrument cluster.

The EX90’s brainpower comes from a pair of Nvidia Drive AI platforms and a Snapdragon 8155 processor. Volvo claims this provides “exactly the amount of computing power [it] needs for the future,” so expect frequent over-the-air (OTA) updates to keep the car’s software and safety features up-to-date.

We don’t know yet which variants will be available here in Malaysia just yet, although we can always look to Thailand for hints. There, the Volvo EX90 was launched in November last year in three variants, with the Performance variant available in both six- and seven-seater guises.

Standard equipment on the Thailand-spec EX90 include 20-inch wheels, LED headlamps, a four-zone climate control system, as well as a panoramic glass roof. Upgrading to the two Ultra variants will also see the inclusion of an air suspension system with adaptive damping, the pixel LED headlights with active high beam, massage function for the front-row seats, as well a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins 3D sound system.

Pricing for the Volvo EX90 in Thailand ranges between THB4,290,000 (approx. RM564k) and THB 4,890,000 (approx. RM643k). We’ll have to wait for the official launch to get the Malaysian pricing, but it’s safe to say that this premium electric SUV will come with a premium price tag.
