Volvo Car Malaysia has confirmed that the Volvo EX90, its flagship seven-seater fully electric EV SUV, will finally be making landfall in Malaysia soon – most likely this year.
In a comment following the company’s 2024 sales performance announcement, Volvo Car Malaysia sales director, Chris Tan said, “We now have a focused portfolio of fully electric vehicles for Malaysia with our flagship seven-seater Volvo EX90 coming next.”
The Volvo EX90 was first teased for our market as early as December 2022, but global production delays have forced the company to postpone the launch of the ‘electric XC90’ in Malaysia, with the EX30 EV crossover filling the void.
As usual, no specifications have been revealed just yet, aside from a line in the press release reading “The upcoming Volvo EX90 is the company’s largest all-electric SUV and incorporates Volvo Cars’ most advanced safety technology to date such as lidar, core computing, and occupant monitoring for drivers and passengers.” That said, we can always look to our neighbours for some hints.

The Volvo EX90 was launched in Thailand late last year, with three variants on offer. The base Twin Motor Plus, priced at THB4,290,000 (approx. RM566k), sports a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain with 408 hp (300 kW) and 770 Nm, while the Twin Motor Performance Ultra, available in both six- and seven-seater guises priced equally at THB4,890,000 (approx. RM645k), gets a more powerful 517 hp (380 kW) and 910 Nm dual-motor setup.
In performance terms, the Plus variant completes the century sprint in 5.9 seconds, while the extra firepower of the Performance Ultra twins drops the 0-100 km/h sprint time down to 4.9 seconds. Top speed, as usual, is a Volvo-standard 180 km/h.
All variants share the same 111 kWh (107 kWh net usable) nickle manganese cobalt ternary battery pack, offering up to 600 km (WLTP) of range for the Plus, and 590 km for the Performance Ultra variants.
An onboard 11 kW AC charger allows the seven-seater flagship EV SUV to fully recharge in roughly 10 hours. DC fast charging, meanwhile, is supported at up to 250 kW, translating to a 10-80% charge in approximately 30 minutes.

Standard equipment on the Thailand-spec Volvo EX90 include LED exterior lighting, 20-inch wheels, a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display paired to a nine-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic glass roof, as well as a 14-speaker Bose sound system.
Those who opted for the Performance Ultra variants will alsobe treated to an adaptive air suspension system, the more advanced pixel matrix LED headlamps, a more advanced 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins 3D sound system, massage function in the front seats, and of course, the choice between six or seven seats.
Given the popularity of the luxury EV MPVs in Malaysia these days, started by the Zeekr 009 and soon to be joined by the Denza D9 and XPeng X9, would the Swedish flagship enjoy the same kind of excitement when it launches in Malaysia, especially when it’s in the trendier SUV bodystyle?
