With the current RON95 petrol subsidies coming to an end soon, Jaecoo Malaysia wants to prove once and for all that its upcoming J7 PHEV (plug-in hybrid) should be at the top of your consideration if you care about fuel efficiency. To do that, the Chinese carmaker brought five units of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV on a cross-country drive, starting at Singapore and ending all the way in Hatyai, Thailand, all without stopping for petrol or charging.
In a single tank of fuel and no additional charging stops, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV recorded a maximum range of 1,427.5 km during the drive, with all five cars safely surpassing its 1,200 km WLTP-rated range. During the trip, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV also recorded a pure electric range of 108 km, some 18 km more than its officially rated EV range!
As tested, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV’s calculated fuel consumption figure stands at 3.5 L/100 km, far exceeding its official figures of 6.6 L/100 km.
Speaking on the impressive results, Jaecoo Malaysia Vice President, Emily Lek said, “We are incredibly proud to finally demonstrate the Jaecoo J7 PHEV’s performance to the local market. It has truly excelled when put to the test during the course of this journey, a testament to the Jaecoo brand promise of delivering best-in-class vehicles.”
“In addition to being the only PHEV with a direct current (DC) charging capability, our Super Hybrid System technology is the first in its class here in Malaysia. We are excited for our customers to enjoy the benefits of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV very soon,” she added.
The main contributor to the Jaecoo J7’s impressive fuel economy is its hybrid system, dubbed the Super Hybrid System. It’s made up of three core components, comprising its fifth-generation 1.5-litre TGDi inline-four Miller cycle engine, a dedicated hybrid CVT gearbox with an integrated motor, and a hybrid 18.3 kWh battery pack.
While its combined outputs of 347 hp (255 kW) and 525 Nm is certainly impressive, the Super Hybrid System’s killer feature is its ability to work in both parallel and series hybrid configurations, as well pure EV and pure engine drive modes, giving the crossover an extra level of flexibility to maximise range in various driving conditions.

In line with its whole flexiblity MO, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV is also designed with multiple charging methods, from a normal 3.3 kW three-pin plug charger, going up to a 6.6 kW AC charger using a home wallbox, and even DC fast charging support of up to 40 kW, which refills the battery from 30-80% in just 20 minutes. The Jaecoo J7 PHEV is currently the only PHEV in the market to offer DC fast charging capability.
The Jaecoo J7 PHEV is set to make its official launch in Malaysia in February 2025, to be offered in a single front-wheel drive variant.
