Jaecoo J7 PHEV in Malaysia – up to 1,300km range on a full tank, est RM170k

Jaecoo Malaysia is previewing the J7 PHEV at the Orange Atrium, Sunway Pyramid. The J7 PHEV will be available for public viewing until this Sunday, October 27th. it is available in all-wheel drive (AWD) and front-wheel drive (FWD) configurations. Prices will start from an estimated RM170,000 and it’s expected to arrive by the end of the year. The J7 PHEV is now available for booking. Currently there are two options for the standard J7, FWD costs RM138,800 while the AWD costs RM148,800.

The Jaecoo J7 PHEV features several exterior updates that distinguish it from its petrol-powered version. These include a new set of 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Kumho tyres (Giti on standard J7) with aerodynamic covers and sleeker side mirrors. Additionally, a discreet flap has been added to the right side of the vehicle to house the CCS2 charging port. Aside from these subtle changes, the J7 PHEV retains the stylish design of its sibling.

While the interior largely retains the J7’s spacious and modern design, featuring a prominent 14.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display, the PHEV model introduces a redesigned centre console.

The rotary drive mode selector has been replaced with a sleek row of buttons, and the traditional gear lever has been swapped for a more modern and ergonomic stalk behind the steering wheel.

Interestingly, the start-stop button found in the petrol J7 has been removed; the PHEV J7 starts automatically once the driver buckles the seat belt and steps on the brake.

Boot space in the J7 PHEV has also been increased to 500 litres from the 424 litres in the petrol J7. This is because the J7 PHEV does not come with a spare tyre, only a repair kit. As a result, the boot floor is also lower than in the petrol J7.

Under the hood, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV replaces the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. While this engine alone produces 143 hp and 215 Nm of torque, it works in tandem with a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) that houses an electric motor generating 204 hp (150kW) and 310 Nm.

Combined, this hybrid system delivers 347 hp and 525 Nm of torque, enabling the J7 PHEV to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.5 seconds. This is slightly quicker than the 9.2 seconds achieved by the front-wheel-drive petrol J7.

An 18.3kW battery provides an all-electric range of 106 km based on the NEDC cycle. Combined with a claimed fuel efficiency of 5.99 l/100km and a 60-litre fuel tank (51 litres for 2WD and 57 litres for AWD in the petrol J7), the J7 PHEV can travel up to 1,300 km on a tank of fuel (NEDC).

For added convenience, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV supports DC fast charging up to 40 kW and AC charging up to 6.6 kWh, and it even includes a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, allowing it to power external devices using the car’s battery.

Safety-wise, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV is equipped with a suite of advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS) like its petrol counterpart. These include adaptive cruise control (ACC), autonomous emergency brake (AEB), curve speed assistance (CSA) and others.
