Gallery: 2024 BYD M6 – spacious family EV packed with value, from RM110k

The BYD M6, launched as a fully electric (EV) seven-seater MPV, is offered in two variants: Standard and Extended. With prices starting at RM109,800 on-the-road without insurance, it undercuts even the top-spec Mitsubishi Xpander by RM100.

While the Extended variant comes in at RM123,800, making it about RM14,000 pricier than the aforementioned top-spec Xpander, the significant increase in size, performance, and features may justify the price difference for many buyers.

BYD M6 Practicality and features

Space is paramount for any MPV, and the BYD M6, with its aptly placed “Space” badge on the C-pillar, certainly lives up to the name. Measuring 4,710 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and with a 2,800 mm wheelbase, it surpasses the Xpander in every dimension.

This translates to a more spacious interior, promising comfortable road trips and ample room for those occasional Ikea trips, thanks to its 580-litre boot space with the third-row seats folded. For even larger cargo, folding down the second row expands the boot space significantly, making the M6 a versatile hauler.

Infotainment is provided by a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen that dominates the dashboard, providing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. For those who like to add a bit of fun to their journeys, the BYD M6 offers an optional karaoke system with a dedicated microphone – a unique feature for a seven-seater MPV.

Performance

Being an EV, the BYD M6 enjoys inherent advantages of it. The Standard variant boasts a front-mounted electric motor delivering 163 hp and 310 Nm, while the Extended variant provides an extra oomph with 204 hp. This translates to a 0-100 km/h time of 10.1 seconds for the Standard and 8.6 seconds for the Extended variant.

Equipped with a 55.4 kWh battery, the Standard variant achieves a NEDC-rated range of up to 420 km, while the Extended variant goes even further with a 71.8 kWh battery and a range of 530 km (NEDC).

It’s worth noting that the NEDC cycle tends to be more optimistic, than the stricter WLTP cycle. However, the real-world range should still be sufficient for most daily needs and even occasional road trips, especially with the expanding charging infrastructure in Malaysia.

Supporting both 7kW AC and 89kW DC charging on the Standard variant, and up to 115kW DC charging on the Extended variant, the BYD M6 allows for quick replenishment of its battery, taking only 40 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% on the Extended variant. With the optional karaoke system, those charging breaks can be transformed into an entertaining interlude for the whole family.

Safety

As standard, the BYD M6 comes equipped with six airbags, stability control, and a 360-degree surround-view monitor for added convenience during parking. The Extended variant further elevates safety with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which includes features such as:

  • Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
  • Adaptive cruise control (ACC)
  • Lane centering assist (LCA)
  • Blind spot monitoring (BSM)
  • Lane departure assist (LDA)
  • Front collision warning (FCW)
  • Rear collision warning (RCW)
  • Door opening warning (DOW)
  • Emergency lane keeping assist (ELKA)
  • Intelligent High Beam (IHB)

The BYD M6, with two variants priced from RM109,800 for the Standard and RM123,800 for the Extended, offers exceptional value. With over 1,000 bookings received in the first month of release, it’s clear that the M6 resonates with Malaysian buyers seeking an affordable yet spacious family MPV with all the advantages of an EV. Its combination of practicality, performance, and competitive pricing makes it a compelling choice in the current market.
