Jaecoo J7 PHEV open for ROI in Malaysia – 88 km range!

After a brief preview at the 2024 Malaysia Autoshow, Jaecoo Malaysia has now begun taking registrations of interest for the Jaecoo J7 PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid). No details nor pricing information were divulged just yet, but we do have a pretty good idea on the former based on the car that was shown here in Malaysia previously.

Interested parties can register their interest on Jaecoo’s Malaysia official website, linked here.

The PHEV variant of the Jaecoo J7 swaps the 1.6-litre turbo inline-four mill for a 1.5-litre TGDi petrol engine, paired to a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) that includes an electric motor within. Altogether, the system outputs 347 hp and 525 Nm of torque (197 hp, 290 Nm on petrol J7), with all of that sent exclusively to the front wheels.

Jaecoo claims that the J7 PHEV can travel for up to 88 km on pure electric mode, courtesy of its fairly large 18 kWh battery pack (per Chinese specifications). When driven in normal hybrid configuration, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV is also rated for a fuel consumption figure of just 4.9 litres/100km, which translates to a total range of over 1,200 km thanks to the 60-litre fuel tank.

And due to the battery size, Jaecoo has also saw fit to include DC fast charging support on the J7 PHEV, setting itself apart from many other plug-in hybrids on the roads. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) is also supported, allowing you to power external electrical appliances with the vehicle.

Appearance wise, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV is essentially identical to its petrol-powered sibling, save for a different wheel design, and an additional flap on the opposite side of the fuel filler port to house the CCS2 charging port.

The interior has also remained largely unchanged, characterised by a large 14.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display on the dashboard. The PHEV does differ slightly in the centre console layout, however, with the rotary drive mode selector replaced by a row of buttons, while the gear lever has also been removed in favour of a stalk behind the steering wheel.

With the Jaecoo J7 PHEV now open for registration of interest, a local Malaysian launch shouldn’t be too far away – and all that’s left is pricing. Given that the petrol-powered J7 is priced at RM138,800 and RM148,800 for the 2WD and 4WD variants respectively, what would the plug-in hybrid’s sticker price be? Leave your guesses in the comments!
