Toyota Prius sets new world record, Los Angeles to New York with just 2.53L/100km

The Toyota Prius continues to impress. Recently it set a new Guinness World Record for the ‘lowest fuel consumption driving across the USA, from west to east coast.

The Prius was driven by a famous ‘hypermiler’, Wayne Gerdes, from Los Angeles City Hall to New York City Hall, covering a distance 3,211 miles (5,168 km). That’s the equivalent of travelling from Lisbon, Portugal to Berlin, Germany.

Gerdes drove the Prius through a variety of different roads and terrains. This included the mountain roads up to 7,000 feet above sea level and in the Mojave desert where temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celcius.

The Prius still achieved a remarkable fuel consumption figure of just 2.53L/100km (39.5km/L). The previous record set was around 3.7L/100km (27km/L).

The Prius used was a 2.0L variant featuring Toyota’s 5th generation hybrid system with 194 hp and 206 Nm of torque. Its 0-100 km/h time is just 7.1 seconds. Unfortunately, it is not officially sold in Malaysia but available in neighbouring countries like Thailand and Singapore.

“Slower take-offs from standstill and keeping even pressure on the accelerator pedal,” was the advise Gerdes offered for efficient fuel consumption. He also added that when stops are ahead, easing off the accelerator early and using the vehicle’s momentum to glide as you approach the stop will greatly help with fuel economy.
