Volvo ES90 EV sedan confirmed, teased ahead of March 2025 debut

During the global unveiling of the new Volvo XC90 facelift, Volvo Cars took the opportunity to tease the upcoming Volvo ES90 electric sedan towards the end of the presentation. Shown in a heavily shadowed image and video for the time being, the Volvo ES90 has also “appeared” with its own web page on Volvo UK and European Volvo websites. Previously only speculation, the Volvo ES90’s name has now been confirmed by the company itself.

Following the new naming convention that Volvo has adopted for its EVs with the “E” prefix (i.e. EX30, EX90, EM90), the new ES90 will be the fully electric counterpart to the S90, the company’s flagship sedan. Back in January 2024, it was leaked that pre-production of this car has begun, albeit known internally as the V551.

According to earlier reports, the Volvo ES90 will sit on the Swedish carmaker’s SPA2 platform, which the Volvo EX90 and Polestar 4 are also built upon. The upcoming all-electric luxury sedan is said to feature either 400 V or 800 V electric powertrains and is said to measure 4,999 mm long, 1,945 mm wide, and 1,547 mm tall, with a 3,205 mm long wheelbase. This essentially makes the Swedish sedan slightly taller and wider but shorter than the BMW i5.

No official information has been revealed on the technical aspects of Volvo’s new electric sedan. On the ES90’s official web page, Volvo calls the ES90 “Fully Electric and in a class of its own. Our [Volvo’s] next-generation premium car is designed for a life in Balance.” The webpage also confirms that the ES90 will make its global debut in March 2025 in Stockholm, Sweden, and allows customers to register their interest in the car.

In Malaysia, Volvo will soon launch its smallest EV SUV, the Volvo EX30. Unlike the European Volvo sites, the Volvo ES90 has not “appeared” on Volvo Car Malaysia’s site yet. With the ES90 confirmed, could we potentially see an EV wagon called the EV90?
