Volvo ES90 EV pre-production started in China, global debut expected in 2024

Just in case you didn’t know, Volvo is in the works of developing an all-new all-electric sedan known as the Volvo ES90. Set to be the Swedish mark’s future flagship sedan, it will be replacing the brand’s current S90 sedan and is expected to make its global debut this year.

A pre-production unit of the Volvo ES90, known internally as the V551, has reportedly rolled off the pre-production line of one of the factories owned by Volvo’s parent company, Geely in China. Production for the luxury sedan is also expected to start soon.

This is according to an image leaked from Volvo’s employee intranet, as reported by Autocar and Tekniken Varld. The image shows Volvo’s production team in Zhejiang posing in the factory with signs that read “Volvo Cars V551 First VP Car Celebration”, and “Confidential Top Secret”.

The Volvo ES90 will sit on the Swedish carmaker’s SPA2 platform, which the Volvo EX90 and Polestar 4 are also built upon. The upcoming all-electric luxury sedan is said to feature either 400 V or 800 V electric powertrains, and is said to measure 4,999 mm long, 1,945 mm wide, and 1,547 mm tall, with a 3,205 mm long wheelbase. This essentially makes the Swedish sedan slightly taller and wider but shorter than the BMW i5.

Leaked specifications of the upcoming Volvo ES90 also suggest the luxury sedan could come with both single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive layouts. It is also said that a 111 kWh battery pack could also be fitted into the ES90, which should allow the Swedish sedan in its single-motor rear-wheel drive form to travel as far as 600 km.

Closer to home, the current Volvo S90 is offered in a single variant – The Recharge T8 in Inscription Plus trim here in Malaysia. Priced at RM370,888 (OTR, without insurance), the Swedish luxury sedan is powered by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup that outputs 462 hp.
