Volvo XC90 facelift unveiled – same powertrains, bigger 11.2-inch screen

The Volvo XC90 has undergone a significant redesign after an almost decade-long production run. While retaining its Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and body structure from the previous model, the new model features substantial cosmetic and mechanical updates.

Exterior-wise, The facelifted Volvo XC90 features a redesigned grille flanked by updated headlights with revised iconic “Thor’s Hammer” LED daytime running lights. The front bumper incorporates vertical air vents and a wider lower intake. While the LED taillights retain their overall shape, they feature a new lighting pattern. Volvo has expanded its wheel options for the facelifted Volvo XC90, offering a range of alloy wheel designs from 20 to 22 inches.

The most notable change in the facelifted Volvo XC90 is the larger, 11.2-inch portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen. This upgrade offers a 21% increase in pixel density and incorporates the latest user interface from the EX90 and EX30, featuring Google Maps prominently and placing phone and media controls conveniently below.

Despite the traditional layout with vertical air vents and a physical volume knob, the facelifted Volvo XC90 cabin incorporates modern elements such as a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system (retain 19-speakers but with reduced 1,100 watts output), an Orrefors crystal gear selector, textured decorative trim made from recycled materials, as well as upgraded ambient lighting. Additional storage space, including a repositioned wireless charging pad, has been added to the centre console for improved practicality.

The Volvo XC90 T8 AWD remains a popular choice in the Malaysian market, thanks to its successful plug-in hybrid configuration. The facelifted model maintains its core powertrain setup, featuring a slightly detuned 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that puts out 310 hp (metric) and 400 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 145 hp (metric) and 309 Nm electric motor and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The facelifted Volvo XC90 now produces a total system output of 455 hp (metric), allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. Despite this power reduction, the vehicle’s 2.3-tonne weight remains unchanged. The battery capacity remains at 18.8 kWh, resulting in a limited pure electric range of 63 to 71 km. A full charge using a 6.4 kW AC charger takes approximately 3 hours.

Volvo also continues to offer two 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain options. Both utilize the same 2.0-litre engine, with the B5 variant producing 250 hp (metric) and 360 Nm, resulting in a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.7 seconds. The B6 variant delivers a more powerful output of 299 hp (metric).

While the engines remain largely unchanged, the facelifted Volvo XC90 features upgraded suspension with adaptive dampers that can mechanically adjust to varying road conditions. This enhancement complements the optional adaptive air suspension system. To further enhance refinement, additional soundproofing measures have been implemented to reduce road and wind noise.

Safety-wise, the facelifted Volvo XC90 maintains its reputation for advanced safety features. Standard equipment includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrians, cyclists, oncoming vehicles, and large animal detection, Pilot Assist Level 2 semi-autonomous driving, Run-off Road Protection, emergency stop assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert with auto brake. The vehicle-to-X communication (V2X) is available in selected markets.

The facelifted Volvo XC90 is now available to order in Europe, with production and deliveries due to start at the end of this year.
