Toyota GR Corolla facelift debuts – new 8-speed automatic gearbox

The Toyota GR Corolla, previously available exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission, will now offer an 8-speed automatic option for the facelift model. In addition to the transmission choice, Toyota has made performance enhancements to the vehicle, including increased torque and improved cooling systems.

The GR Corolla’s new 8-speed automatic transmission features launch control and paddle shifters for enhanced driver engagement. The transmission’s software is specifically tuned for the GR Corolla, differentiating it from those used in the GR Supra, GR86, and GR Yaris. Unlike the other models, which rely on vehicle dynamics for gear shifts, the GR Corolla’s transmission anticipates driver input through brake and accelerator pedal movements for quicker gear changes.

The GR Corolla offers four selectable driving modes which are Normal, Sport, Eco, and Custom. The automatic transmission has been specifically tuned for the Sport mode, mimicking the shift points of the manual gearbox for an engaging driving experience. To ensure optimal performance under demanding conditions, the automatic transmission is equipped with a transmission cooler.

The turbocharged 1.6-liter 3-cylinder engine maintains its 300 hp output but delivers an increased torque to 400 Nm from 370 Nm. The front and rear Torsen limited-slip differentials (LSD) are standard across all variants.

Toyota has made refinements to the hatchback’s suspension system. The addition of rebound springs to front and rear dampers aims to improve vehicle control during spirited driving. Further enhancements include upgraded rear coils and stabilizers, and a higher trailing arm mounting point to reduce body squat during acceleration.

The newly designed front bumper is not just for looks. The GR Corolla has improved brake ducts and a new air curtain construction that decreases turbulence around the tires, improving stability. The new face also allows for the automatic transmission cooler and the optional sub-radiator.

Toyota will offer the facelifted GR Corolla in Core, Premium, and Premium Plus trims. The previously offered Circuit Edition will no longer be available. The top-tier Premium Plus trim includes standard features such as a carbon-fiber roof, vented hood, and head-up display. Interior enhancements include new trim materials throughout the cabin. The Core and Premium trims feature 18-inch, 15-spoke alloy wheels, while the Premium Plus model comes equipped with 18-inch matte black wheels. All GR Corolla variants are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.

Safety-wise, the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across all variants. This includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDASA), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Road Sign Assist (RSA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and many more.
