Mazda CX-80 debuts with 3.3L 6-cylinder diesel MHEV, 3-row seats

Mazda has just debuted its latest SUV, the Mazda CX-80. As its name suggests it is positioned on top of the CX-60 and CX-70, but below the CX-90. The CX-80 is also the carmaker’s first three-row SUV to be introduced in Europe and will be the flagship model in its European product lineup.

The Mazda CX-80 is the second model to be built on top of the brand’s Large Product Group platform, after the CX-90. It measures 4,995 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, and 1,710 mm tall, making it just about as big as the Volvo XC90 and Hyundai Santa Fe.

As compared to the Mazda CX-60, the CX-80 is 250 mm longer and 24 mm taller than the CX-60. When put beside the larger CX-90, the CX-80 is 105 mm shorter, 104 mm narrower, and 35 mm shorter. As compared to the CX-9, which is available in Malaysia, the CX-80 is also slightly smaller, measuring 80 mm shorter, 79 mm narrower, and 37 mm shorter.

On the outside, the Mazda CX-80 sports the brand’s Kodo design language and looks like a stretched CX-60. As expected, it comes with standard kits such as LED headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRLs) but loses out on the exhaust pipe garnish around the back, which Mazda said is done to provide a cleaner and more elegant appearance. The CX-80 is offered with 20-inch wheel options with various designs, depending on the variant chosen.

Performance-wise, the Mazda CX-80 is offered with two hybrid powertrains. The first of the two is the “e-SKyActiv PHEV” plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. This set-up features a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated (NA) inline-4 petrol engine, an electric motor, and a 17.8kWh battery that results in an all-electric range of 60 km. Its system output is rated at 328 hp (metric) and 500 Nm, enabling it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and achieve a top speed of 195 km/h.

The second powertrain option offered is the “e-SKYACTIV D” diesel mild hybrid (MHEV) powertrain which features a 3.3-litre inline 6-cylinder turbodiesel engine with the brand’s M Hybrid Boost. Power output is rated at 245 hp (metric) and 550 Nm, allowing a century sprint time of 8.4 seconds and a 219 km/h top speed. Both powertrains are paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to all four wheels, with a bias towards the rear.

Inside, the Mazda CX-80 can be had with either seven seats or just six with captain seats for a more comfortable and spacious cabin. Even with the third-row seats up, Mazda claims the CX-80’s boot has enough space for a golf bag or a baby stroller.

Interior kits that come with the Mazda CX-80 include tri-zone air conditioning, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, and Amazon Alexa voice control. There is also a memory function that uses facial recognition to restore settings for a particular driver.

On the safety front, the Mazda CX-80 is equipped with cruising & traffic support (CTS) with unresponsive driver support function, which is the first time it has been featured in a Mazda vehicle in Europe. The SUV also comes with other features such as emergency lane-keeping system (ELKS), blind spot monitoring (BSM) with vehicle exit warning, and driver monitoring system.
