Tesla Cybertruck teased in Malaysia, EV pickup launching soon?

Tesla Malaysia has just dropped a teaser video of its pickup truck – the Tesla Cybertruck – on its social media pages, with a caption that reads “Stay Tuned”. In the video, the Cybertruck is seen being transported down from a cargo plane at an airport, covered in black cloth, similar to the teasers we have seen for other markets like Japan and Thailand. The car is then driven into a garage fully uncovered, where it joins the Model 3 and the Model Y, which both made their launch in Malaysia last year.

Unique-looking is the least we can say to describe the Tesla Cybertruck’s design. The boxy pickup truck has gotten tonnes of attention since it was globally introduced in 2019, as it looks nothing like the regular pickup truck we are used to seeing.

Its angular exterior and raw metal appearance are not there for no reason though, as it wears a stainless-steel exoskeleton that is claimed to help reduce dents, damage, and long-term corrosion. Beyond its body panels, the Tesla Cybertruck also sports an armour glass which is claimed to be able to resist the impact of a baseball at 112 km/h or class 4 hail.

Having made its global debut late last year, the Tesla Cybertruck is available in three variants, namely the top-spec Cyberbeast, the All-Wheel Drive (AWD), and the entry-level Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD). It is to be noted that the RWD variant won’t be available until 2025.

It hasn’t been confirmed which variants of the Tesla Cybertruck will make it to Malaysia just yet, as the American carmaker hasn’t announced if or when its pickup will launch here. Upon visiting Tesla Malaysia’s website, however, you will find the Cybertruck on the site, which has been the case since early December last year. For the record, Malaysia was the first ASEAN market to receive the Model 3 Highland.

With that said, could this mean the Tesla Cybertruck will be making its launch in Malaysia sooner than we think? And will this mark the pickup truck’s first ASEAN launch, ahead of Thailand, where the Cybertruck has also been teased just recently? Only time can tell.

The top-of-the-range Tesla Cybertruck is powered by a tri-motor AWD setup that puts out 845 hp, enabling it to perform the century sprint in just 2.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 209 km/h. The Cyberbeast’s all-electric range is rated at 515 km.

Powering the mid-range Tesla Cybertruck AWD on the other hand is a dual-motor AWD powertrain that feeds 600 hp to all four wheels, resulting in a century sprint time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h. The AWD variant’s maximum range is rated at 547 km.

Despite not being ready for production just yet, the entry-level Tesla Cybertruck RWD is said to feature a single-motor setup that enables it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 180 km/h. The electric range for the entry-level truck is rated at an estimated 402 km.

All in all, we can’t wait to see the Tesla Cybertruck with our own eyes, as the car already looks otherworldly enough even through the screen. For context, the Cybertruck is about the same size as the gigantic Ford F-150 which borderline struggles to fit into Malaysian roads and car parks. We wonder what will happen to the Malaysian road scene if the Cybertruck makes it to Malaysian shores someday.
