2024 Volvo C40 launched in Malaysia, RM289k – 550km range, 200kW charging

The updated 2024 Volvo C40 has finally been launched in Malaysia. It retains the same price tag of RM288,888, but receives a boosted electric range which is now rated at 550 km (previously 451 km), and a faster maximum DC charging rate of 200 kW (previously 150 kW).

A summary of the updates for the Volvo C40 in Malaysia is as such:

  • New 19-inch alloy wheels
  • New Vapour Grey exterior colour option
  • New Pixel LED headlights
  • New larger 82 kWh battery (replaces old 78 kWh battery)
  • Longer range at 550 km (previously 451 km)
  • Faster maximum DC charging rate of 200 kW (previously 150 kW)
  • New rear-biased AWD power distribution (previously 50:50)

The key improvement to the Volvo C40 for Malaysia is its improved EV performance numbers. For the same price as the previous iteration, you can now drive up to 550 km on a single charge thanks to its larger 82 kWh battery. Your charging experience during a road trip is also much better as the C40 is now capable of a maximum DC charging rate of 200 kW.

The faster DC charging rate allows for the car to go from 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in just 27 minutes. The C40’s maximum AC charging rate remains the same at 11 kW.

The performance figures for the C40 remain the same with a maximum power output of 300 kW (408 hp metric). While that figure has remained the same, the power distribution is now rear-biased as the more powerful rear motor makes 183 kW while the smaller front motor makes 117 kW. Previously, the C40 utilised two 150 kW motors at the front and rear.

As for the single-motor version of the C40 which is not available in Malaysia, it has now been changed to a rear-wheel drive (RWD) configuration from the previous front-wheel drive (FWD) layout.

Not much has changed on the outside of the 2024 Volvo C40, and the easiest way to tell it apart from the older model would be the new 19-inch wheels. They feature a new asymmetrical look and Volvo says that this new design has better aerodynamics.

There is a new colour option added to the C40 and it is called Vapour Grey, a colour that you may have seen on other Volvos. Other than that, a significant update to the C40’s exterior would be the new Pixel LED headlights that utilise sensors to control forward lighting, capable of adjusting brightness for specific areas to ensure drivers’ visibility without blinding oncoming traffic.

Other features of the Volvo C40 for Malaysia remain the same. As before, the C40 comes equipped with the 5-year complimentary Digital Services for access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Play Store and Volvo Cars app remote functions. Although the Volvo C40 is now known as the Volvo EC40, the change has not been reflected on Volvo Car Malaysia’s website.
