Volvo XC40 EV and C40 renamed to EX40 and EC40, “Recharge” dropped from PHEV names

There’s a new way to call Volvo’s electric cars as the company has announced that the Volvo XC40 EV and the Volvo C40 are now known as the Volvo EX40 and the Volvo EC40 respectively. Thus, the petrol and hybrid versions of the XC40 still retain their names. Volvo has also dropped the “Recharge” moniker from its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models.

With the name change of the EX40 and the EC40, Volvo’s naming convention is now tied in better with its new models like the EX30, EX90, and EM90. Volvo says that the name change reflects its transformation towards becoming a fully electric car manufacturer.

The EX40 and EC40 have not only received new names but have also been given a new optional “Performance software pack” for their twin motor variants. The Performance software pack increases power output by 25 kW (33 hp metric) and also includes a quicker accelerator response and a ‘Performance’ drive mode to unlock the full 325 kW (442 hp metric).

In markets where the Performance software pack is available, customers can opt for it when ordering a new car. Owners of the “old” 2024 C40 and XC40 can also upgrade their cars with the new optional performance software.

Volvo is also introducing special “Black Editions” of the EX40, EC40, and the XC40, following the success of the XC60 Black Edition from last year. The Black Edition models come with Onyx Black paint, high gloss black badging, 20-inch five-spoke alloys in high gloss black and the choice between microtech or textile charcoal interiors.

On Volvo Car Malaysia’s official website, the name change has not taken effect just yet. THE EX40 and the EC40 are still listed as the XC40 Recharge Electric and the C40 Recharge respectively.
