Volvo EM90 EV MPV debuts – 738km range, approx. RM528k, China first

Volvo has finally unveiled its first electric MPV – the Volvo EM90. It is already available for pre-orders for customers in China, but Volvo has yet to announce its availability in other markets. In China, the Volvo EM90 costs RMB818,000 (approx. RM528k).

The EM90 shares the same base as the Zeekr 009, but naturally features Volvo’s design language and safety elements. Volvo says that the EM90 is “a car designed to be a space where you can find time to connect, think, or just relax. To spend time with your loved ones, find peace of mind, and enrich your life.”

Like other Volvo models, the EM90 features the signature Thor’s hammer headlights at the front. These headlights will greet you with an illuminating front. Also at the front is the first-ever illuminated grille on a Volvo car. Interestingly, skyscrapers inspire the Volvo EM90’s design and you can see this influence in the vertical design elements at the front and back.

Volvo has always been known for how well done its designs are for its models’ rear ends, especially on its wagons. With the larger surface area of an MPV, the iconic vertical Volvo tail lamps have also evolved, combining vertical and horizontal elements into one. Right in the middle of the tailgate and the light bar is a “Volvo” lettering.

If you’re wondering about the EM90’s wheel size, it comes with either 19- or 20-inch aero wheels. The EM90 also features a dual-chamber air suspension system and “silent tyres”.

Now to the important EV numbers. The Volvo EM90 houses a 116-kWh battery pack that provides up to 738 km of range (CLTC) on a single charge. No WLTP figures are out yet but do expect the number to be more conservative. With DC fast charging, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes.

As for performance, Volvo reports that the EM90’s single-motor setup makes 200 kW (272 hp metric). This setup enables a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.3 seconds.

Inside, the Volvo EM90 introduces Volvo’s new take on cabin design. For the first time ever, a Volvo model features a large floating horizontal 15.4-inch head unit. The digital instrument cluster is also a floating type, indicating the Sino origin of the EM90. New cabin design aside, the EM90 still features the signature Volvo Crystal gear selector on the centre console.

Other interior highlights of the Volvo EM90 include a 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, 5G connectivity, a voice assistant, and a 15.6-inch roof-mounted screen for the rear passengers. According to Volvo, the EM90 is a “Scandinavian living room on the move”. The EM90 features 6 seats with the second-row equipped with lounge seats.

In terms of safety, the EM90 naturally comes with the high safety standards of a Volvo. There is the usual wide range of safety and advanced driver assistance systems that are supported by various types of sensors. The EM90 is also built with a strong safety cage made of various forms of high-strength steel including boron steel that help offset the impact from a possible crash in an efficient way. The EM90 also features double A-pillars for maximum visibility.
