Video: 2023 Proton X90 Flagship review – Affordable luxury?

“Proton” and “luxury” are two words you’d never expect to hear in the same sentence, even just a short five years ago. But today’s Proton is a very different company; SUVs are now their bread and butter, but more importantly, their cars are also loaded with premium-grade equipment, from nappa leather upholstery to even a connected infotainment system. And its latest flagship, the Proton X90, is the ultimate testament to the newfound class.

Because not only does it have a Toyota Alphard-esque six-seat configuration, the two captain seats in the second row even has seat ventilation – something even the BMW X7, a car that costs nearly five times the price of the range-topping X90, doesn’t have.

And that’s not even the half of it. The X90 is also Proton’s first foray into electrification – its first step into developing a fully home-grown electric vehicle. It’s still a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine, albeit with the addition of a 48V belt-starter-generator, so don’t expect to be sent to the back of your seats whenever you punch the accelerator. But if your sole concern is if it’s enough for day-to-day usage, we’re here to assure you that it’s good enough.

At just RM152,800 for the range-topping Flagship variant, the Proton X90 might just be the bargain of the century – cheap enough for families that need a six-seater, yet equipped with premium touches that’ll make even the Mercs blush. What else is there to know about Proton’s latest crown jewel in the full video above.
