Perodua CEO: Brand’s EVs & hybrids to take up 20% of new car sales by 2030

Perodua is targeting its future all-electric (EV) and hybrid vehicles (HEV) to make up 20% of new car sales in Malaysia by 2030, according to a report by Bernama. Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer said that this goal can be made possible “if all industry players can work together”.

“We are working together with the government and other partners. We have been appointed in the new industrial plan to spearhead the EV development in Malaysia,” said the Perodua boss.

“We need to come up with a new product. We have not finalised the production timing, but the target given by the government – 30% by 2025 or 2030 – will materialise if all parties cooperate,” he added.

Zainal Abidin also stated that building the EV ecosystem as a whole requires huge investments. Therefore, he hopes that other companies will be able to aid and contribute to achieving the target given by the Malaysian government, which includes building 10,000 charging stations throughout the country.

Last week, Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said that the Malaysian government aims to achieve a goal of having EVs and HEVs account for 20% of new car sales by 2030, 50% by 2040, and 80% by 2050.

Currently, there are no EV or HEV models to be seen in the national carmaker’s lineup just yet. However, the company’s first hybrid model should be coming soon, as the rumoured upcoming Perodua B-segment SUV, codenamed the ‘D66B’, will be making its debut as soon as early next year.

The DNGA-based Toyota Yaris Cross, which is the model the Perodua D66B SUV will be based on, made its launch in Indonesia with two powertrain options offered.

This includes a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated (NA) engine, and a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid powertrain. With that, the upcoming Perodua SUV is expected to come with either one or both of these powertrain options.
