Malaysia’s 10,000 future EV charger locations detailed – 250 in Kelantan, 400 in Sarawak

It is no secret that the Malaysian Government targets to deploy 10,000 EV chargers in Malaysia by 2025. As of August 2023, 1,246 EV chargers have been deployed so more than half of the targeted charging bays have yet to be built. With the newly published “Garis Panduan Perancangan Petak Pengecasan Kenderaan Elektrik” (GPP EVCB), the Malaysian task force has indicated the locations of these future EV chargers.

On a zoomed-out map of Malaysia, it appears that the future 10,000 EV chargers very well cover the peninsular and East Malaysia. Interestingly, the document also details the distribution of EV chargers in Malaysia by state. From what we see in the document, there are plans for 900 EV chargers in Kuala Lumpur, 100 chargers in Putrajaya, 50 chargers in Labuan, and 250 chargers in Kelantan. The full list of the future charger distribution is as such:

For example, Perlis currently has no EV chargers at all.

Regarding the uptake of electric vehicles in Malaysia, the Malaysian Government reports that there are more than 7,500 EV cars in Malaysia as of September 2023. This is a step up from the 3,400 units recorded in 2022.

As for the current 1,246 EV chargers in Malaysia, 1,007 are AC chargers while 239 are DC chargers. Also shared by the EV task force is the fact that 500 chargers are indoors while 746 are outdoors. Also detailed in the GPP EVCB are guidelines for EV charger installation which include their specifications.
