There were various concept cars on display during the Japan Mobility Show 2023, but if we’re talking about more “realistic” displays, one car that really caught our attention was the Toyota Century SUV. Yes, the majestic Toyota Century has been granted an SUV counterpart, although, Toyota isn’t too happy about us calling it an SUV. But that’s pretty much what it is.
Some may say it looks like a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and we totally understand that point of view. Our very own GC Mah sees a fusion of the Cullinan and the Alphard in this luxury SUV from Toyota. To call it majestic is an understatement as the Century SUV’s design commands presence and authority. In fact, the Century SUV was designed with a “stately grandeur” theme. Words don’t quite do this car justice, so we strongly suggest you follow GC Mah in this video to explore the Toyota Century SUV.
As for its powertrain, Toyota has revealed that the Century SUV houses a newly-developed 3.5-litre V6 Parallel plug-in hybrid system, although its exact performance figures haven’t been fully revealed.
The plug-in-hybrid system is mated to an E-CVT and power is sent to all wheels via Toyota’s E-Four advanced all-wheel drive system. For ultimate comfort, the Century is designed to function as an electric vehicle (BEV) for everyday use to minimise vibrations. For long distances, the Century benefits from its hybrid system.
Toyota says that the Century SUV is not only great as a chauffeur car but also as a driver’s car although most of its luxuries are for the rear passenger or “Boss Seat”. The cabin is wide and spacious, and the Century even sports electrochromic rear windows for complete privacy for second-row passengers. Other luxuries include individual mobile control devices, a large glass roof, and a live performance-like sound system.
The Toyota Century will be launched in its home country by the end of 2023 and it will be built at the company’s Tahara plant. We sure wish these were made available for the Malaysian market. Find out more about the car in our video.
