Mazda CX-8 discontinued: Japan production to end in December 2023

Mazda has just announced that the production of the Mazda CX-8 in Japan will be discontinued by the end of 2023 in a statement released on October 30. The CX-8 is a three-row SUV by Mazda that is also sold in Malaysia. Its CKD production in Malaysia, however, will reportedly still carry on for a few more years.

The Mazda CX-8 first debuted in 2018 and has gained popularity in Malaysia as a family SUV. In 2023, the Mazda CX-8 was given a facelift which introduced a new grille design along with other upgrades.

In the latest press release by Mazda, the company says, “The CX-8 was proposed by Mazda as a new option for a multi-passenger vehicle for customers who do not want to give up on performance or design, but still want to enjoy driving with family and friends. It was launched in 2017, and since its introduction, it has created a category of three-row crossover SUVs for Japanese families and has enjoyed the patronage of many customers over the years. Thank you very much. Sales will end when orders reach the production quantity until December.”

In Malaysia, the Mazda CX-8 is offered in five variants – 2.5G 2WD Mid, 2.5G 2WD High, 2.5G 2WD High Plus, 2.2 2WD High Plus, and 2.5G Turbo AWD High Plus. Prices start from RM184,000 and top off at RM220,000. With the Mazda CX-8 soon to be discontinued, three-row SUV offerings left in Malaysia will include the Kia Sorento, Proton X90, and the Toyota Innova Zenix.
