Leaked: Volvo EM90 exterior revealed – Brand’s EV MPV is Chinese-based

Back in August, Volvo first confirmed that it would debut its very first all-electric MPV known as the Volvo EM90 by the end of this year, and put out a teaser video showing a top-down shot of the car. The company then further teased bits and pieces of the car’s design via its social media platforms. Now, leaked images of the car’s full exterior shots have surfaced online, giving us a look at what a modern Volvo MPV is supposed to be like.

Previously, it was reported that the Volvo EM90 would be a twin to the Zeekr 009, which it turns out to be. Both MPVs seem to share many design elements, except for the headlights, grille, alloy wheel designs, rear lights, and of course the badges.

At the front, the Volvo EM90 can be seen sporting the brand’s signature Thor’s hammer LED headlights, which look similar to the ones found on the EX30 and EX90 SUVs. Just like the recently debuted EX30, there is no roof lidar to be found on the EM90’s roof, unlike on the EX90.

As expected with an EV, the Volvo EM90 features a closed-off grille, but interestingly comes with numerous holes which we assume is for ventilation or drag purposes. This is a first for a Volvo as the brand’s other EV models such as the C40 Recharge, XC40 Recharge, EX30, and EX90 all sport ‘grilles’ that are completely closed off.

As per previous teaser images of the EM90 released by Volvo, the new all-electric MPV will also be equipped with the brand’s first illuminated logo. Like the EX30 and EX90, the Volvo EM90 is fitted with door-mounted traditional side-view mirrors. This is unlike the digital side-view cameras found on many recent EVs.

The upcoming Swedish luxury MPV is also fitted with automatic sliding rear doors. On top of the Volvo EM90 is a panoramic sunroof, which has been revealed in previous teasers.

The leaked images also show the Volvo EM90 coming with at least two alloy wheel design choices. Both feature dual-tone paint jobs and look to be of different sizes. However, there could be even more wheel design choices when the Volvo EM90 makes its official debut in Mainland China this coming November 12.

Round the back, the Volvo EM90 sports smoked T-shaped rear lights, which look rather cool, along with an illuminated “VOLVO” script. There are also chrome strips on its rear bumper and within the rear light housing to complete the Swedish MPV’s design.

Like the Zeekr 009, the Volvo EM90 is said to sit on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform. It should also be powered by a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup that puts out a total of 543 hp (metric) and 686 Nm. Powering the electric motors should also be either a 116-kWh or 140-kWh battery pack which can provide up to 702 km (CLTC) and 822 km (CLTC) of range respectively, just like the Zeekr 009 MPV.

As mentioned before, the Volvo EM90 will be making its official debut on November 12, 2023. Order books for the Swedish MPV will also be open on the same day for customers in Mainland China only. The carmaker is also looking into bringing its luxury MPV to other regions at a later date.
