Volvo EM90 teased again ahead of debut – Illuminated logo, China first

Last month, Volvo first confirmed that it will be debuting its very first all-electric MPV, known as the Volvo EM90. It will be making its debut on November 12 this year and the company has also released a teaser video showing a top-down view of the car. And now, the Swedish carmaker has released more teaser images showing more details of its new luxury MPV.

First and foremost, the Volvo EM90 looks to have a rather massive footprint. However, this is no surprise as it carries the number ’90’ in its name, which suggests its identity as the biggest car in the new “EM” lineup.

Based on the images, the Volvo EM90 appears to be fitted with the brand’s signature Thor’s hammer LED daytime running lights (DRLs). Despite being an EV, the EM90 still looks to be carrying a grille, with patterns that somewhat remind us of Mercedes-Benz’s diamond radiator grille.

However, the teaser image of the EM90’s front fascia isn’t complete, therefore we will have to wait for the full reveal. The EM90 will also be the first Volvo model to be equipped with an illuminated logo.

Coming to the Volvo EM90’s sides, we can see the car sporting aerodynamic-looking dual-tone wheels, which go along with its electric vehicle (EV) identity. Interestingly, there is also what seems to be a shark fin antenna on the rear portion of the MPV’s roof. Round the back, we now finally get a peek of Volvo’s MPV’s rear design execution, featuring T-shaped rear lights.

Previously, Volvo first teased the EM90 with a video showing the car’s top-down shot. From the video, we could see the luxury MPV’s cabin sporting a captain seat configuration. However, Volvo has yet to share images of the MPV’s interior, but we can expect the same design simplicity that has been shown in the Volvo EX90 and EX30 SUVs.

The Swedish carmaker’s upcoming EV MPV is also equipped with features such as a panoramic sunroof, along with an illuminated “VOLVO” script at the back.

The Volvo EM90 has also been reported to be a twin to the Zeekr 009, which is built on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform. If the Zeekr 009 were to be any reference for the Volvo, it should measure around 5,209 mm long, 2,024 mm wide, and 1,856 mm tall, with a 3,206 mm long wheelbase.

The Zeekr 009 features either a 116-kWh or 140-kWh battery pack which can provide up to 702 km (CLTC) and 822 km (CLTC) of range respectively. Powering the Zeekr 009 is a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup that puts out a total of 543 hp (metric) and 686 Nm.

Volvo’s first MPV will be making its official debut on November 12, 2023. Order books for Volvo EM90 will also be open on the same day for customers in Mainland China only. The carmaker is also looking into bringing its luxury MPV to other regions at a later date.
