BMW X1, Kia Niro and Hyundai Ioniq 6 named finalists for 2023 World Car of the Year award

The BMW X1, Kia Niro and Hyundai Ioniq 6 have been named the top three finalists for the 2023 World Car of the Year award. The winner will be announced on April 5 at the New York International Auto Show.

To be eligible for the World Car of the Year award, at least 10,000 units of the vehicle must be produced annually and must be priced below the ‘luxury-car level’ in their markets. The vehicles must also be sold in at least two major markets including Europe, China, India, Japan, Korea, North and South America. They must also be on sale within the January 2022 and March 2023 period.

Other categories in the awards include the World Performance Car of the Year, where two of its finalists, the Audi e-tron GT and GR Corolla, are now on sale in Malaysia. The other is a rather surprising inclusion, the Kia EV6 GT. Other awards include the World Luxury Car, World Electric Vehicle, World Urban Car and World Car Design of the Year.

Among all the finalists, the Lucid Air, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and BMW i7 could walk home with more than one award after being named the finalist in more than one category. The following are the top three finalists for the other categories:

World Performance Car of the Year

World Urban Car of the Year
