Volvo XC90 earns 2023 Top Safety Pick+ award, book now for 5 years of free service!

The Volvo XC90 has been awarded the 2023 Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The achievement is especially significant as the organisation has only recently increased the requirements for the awards, with tougher criteria for side crash protection, pedestrian crash prevention systems, and headlights performance.

Most notably, the new IIHS side crash test now involves “82% more energy”, and requires vehicles to earn a ‘good’ rating to qualify for TSP+. Despite the tougher requirements, the Volvo XC90 still passed the tests with flying colours.

“The Volvo XC90 continues to prove, year after year, that it is among the safest vehicles on the road,” said Volvo Cars Safety Centre chief, Asa Haglund. Safety has been ingrained in Volvo’s name for as long as the company existed, and the company has committed to its vision of having no serious injuries or fatalities in a new Volvo, from 2020 onwards.

Recently updated here in Malaysia, the new Volvo XC90 Recharge T8 Ultimate now offers a higher total system output of 462 hp and 709 Nm. The battery pack capacity has also been increased from 11.6 kWh previously to now 18.8 kWh, giving it a pure-electric driving range of up to 77 km based on the NEDC test cycle.

As for the Volvo XC90 B5 Ultimate MHEV, a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine underneath the bonnet sends 263 hp and 390 Nm of torque all four wheels. With electric assistance from the mild-hybrid system, the B5 Ultimate boast a century sprint time of 7.9 seconds, and a combined fuel consumption figure of 8.9 L/100km.
