Video: 2023 Volvo XC40 EV, PHEV & MHEV facelift now in Malaysia, from RM269k

Following its global debut earlier this year, Volvo Car Malaysia has now brought the facelifted XC40 here onto our shores. Offered here in three distinct flavours: P8 Recharge Pure Electric EV, T5 plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and the B5 mild hybrid (MHEV), the facelift update brings upon several aesthetic changes and tech upgrades to the premium compact crossover.

Most notably on the outside, are the restyled headlights inspired by the C40 coupe-crossover, as well as a reworked front bumper with a more vertical-oriented corner faux air vents. The fully-electric Pure Recharge variant also gets a new blank-out panel on the front fascia to more closely match the XC40’s new design language. Meanwhile, each variant also gets their own unique wheel design, although all measuring 19-inches in diameter.

Inside, the facelift also introduces the new Android Automotive OS onto the B5 Ultimate and Recharge Pure Electric variants, with the sole exception being the plug-in hybrid T5 model. The latter still runs on the Sensus system, as the variant will soon be discontinued here in Malaysia.

The fully-electric Volvo XC40 Pure Electric is powered by a dual-motor set-up that makes 408 hp and 660 Nm. The motors are juiced by a 78 kWh battery pack that provides up to 418 km of range (WLTP). The B5 Ultimate gets a mild-hybrid system consisting of a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated inline-four mill and a small ISG motor to make 263 hp and 390 Nm combined, sending power to all wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

As for the soon-to-be-discontinued T5 Ultimate, the plug-in hybrid model gets a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine alongside a bigger electric motor, that makes 262 hp and 425 Nm in total. It’s also the only variant in Malaysia to not get all-wheel drive, with its power routed only to the front wheels via a seven-speed DCT.

Both the Volvo XC40 B5 Ultimate and T5 Ultimate are priced at RM268,888, while the fully-electric P8 Recharge Pure Electric comes in at RM278,888. For more photos and information on all three variants, check out our previous coverage here.
