Volkswagen, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz named Top 3 best-selling brands in Europe 2022

Volkswagen, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz have emerged as the top 3 best-selling brands in Europe in the year 2022, according to JATO Dynamics. Volkswagen sold a total of 1,198,926 units, while Toyota and Mercedes-Benz shipped 766,227 and 647,880 units respectively.

Among the 50 brands survey in 30 markets, the top 11 brands sold more than 500,000 units last year. That said, the total sales volume in Europe last year, which amounted to 11,309,310 units, is 4.1% lower compared to 2021 and is the lowest figure recorded since 1985. The figure also represents a 29% drop compared to pre-pandemic 2019.

“The fallout of the pandemic, followed by the semi-conductor shortage throughout 2021 and 2022, was only compounded by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and subsequent energy price increases, impacting consumer confidence and spending,” said Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics.

As for the best-selling car in Europe last year, the Peugeot 208 has dethroned the Volkswagen Golf, the most popular vehicle in Europe since 2007. Second place went to the Dacia Sandero (200,550 units) while the Volkswagen T-Roc (181,153 units) was the third best-selling car in Europe.

As for electric vehicles (EVs), the best-selling EV was the Tesla Model Y, which came in 13th on the overall chart with 138,128 units sold. Other notable performers include the Hyundai Tucson, which came in 8th as the best-selling C-segment SUV with 150,803 units sold. Chinese automakers that made the list include the likes of BYD, Hongqi, DR Automobiles and Geely-owned Lynk & Co.
