Toyota confirms GR Corolla, GR86, Manual Supra to launch in Malaysia “very soon”

UMW Toyota Motor has confirmed that it will be launching three GR models in Malaysia. The 3 models are the GR86, the GR Corolla, and the 6-speed manual Supra. The announcement was made by UMW Toyota president, Ravindran Kurusamy at the media event today. No timeline has been provided for all three models, but the UMW Toyota president said they will be coming “very soon”.

In Malaysia, UMW Toyota has sold the GR Yaris and GR Supra, although the Supra is only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 6-speed manual version of the Supra made its global debut in April this year, about three years after its global debut with an automatic transmission only.

Together with the introduction of the 6-speed manual transmission to the GR Supra, other improvements include enhanced handling performance and ride comfort, newly designed 19-inch wheels, three new exterior colours, an optional tan interior, and an enhanced JBL sound system. Like its automatic counterpart, the 6-speed manual Supra still runs the 3.0-litre turbo engine that makes 387 hp (metric) and 500 Nm.

Before the 6-speed manual Supra, the GR Corolla made its global debut also in April this year. Powered by a beefed-up GR Yaris-sourced G16E-GTS engine, the GR Corolla makes 304 hp (metric) and 370 Nm. Power is sent to all wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. The GR Corolla made its ASEAN debut last week with Thailand being the first country to welcome it. Only 9 units are available in Thailand (for now), and production of the GR Corolla for the global market this year is limited to 2,000 units only.

Lastly, the all-new GR86 made its global debut in October 2021, providing a much-needed refresh from the 2013 Toyota 86. Powered by the boxer FA24 engine, the GR86 makes 235 hp (metric) and 250 Nm. All power is sent to the rear wheels via either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Its Subaru cousin, the all-new BRZ has already made its debut in Malaysia and has been delivered to several customers.

UMW Toyota’s latest announcement is sure to excite Toyota fans. With the upcoming new additions to the GR family in Malaysia, UMW Toyota will have brought in four GR models to Malaysia (not counting the manual Supra as a new model).
