Toyota GR Corolla launched in Thailand with only 9 units – RM498k, first ASEAN debut

A new ‘GR’ by Toyota has debuted in ASEAN and it is the Toyota GR Corolla. The lucky ASEAN country to first receive the Toyota GR Corolla is Thailand with the car fetching a price of 3.949 million baht (approx. RM497,567). The price of the GR Corolla was officially announced at the 39th Thailand International Motor Expo, and only nine fully-imported (CBU) units will be brought in for now, as Headlightmag reports.

Like its smaller brother, the GR Yaris, the GR Corolla is powered by the same 1.6-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, albeit tuned to make 304 hp (metric) and 370 Nm (43 hp and 10 Nm more than GR Yaris). The 3-banger engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. With an all-wheel drive (AWD) system, the GR Corolla does the century sprint in 5.5 seconds.

The Toyota GR Corolla was globally revealed on March 31, 2022, in California and was launched in Japan in June this year as the ‘GR Corolla RZ’ and the limited-series ‘GR Corolla Morizo Edition’. The Morizo edition weighs 30 kg lighter, bumps the torque to 400 Nm, and uses different gear ratios.

Thailand gets the ‘standard’ GR Corolla as only 200 units of the Morizo Edition were made and were only made available in the US and Japan. The Thai-spec GR Corolla sits on MacPherson strut front suspension and double wishbone rear suspension. The wheels are 18-inch alloy wheels and are wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.

Peaking behind the 18-inch alloys are 4-pot 18-inch ventilated disc brakes in front and 2-pot 16-inch ventilated disc brakes in the rear. The GR Corolla also gets Torsen limited slip differentials (LSDs) in the front and rear.

Toyota GR Corolla Thailand customers also get ‘GR Service Package’, ‘GR Roadside Services’, and ‘GR Experience’. ‘GR Service Package’ is a car-maintenance-by-distance package that includes free periodic maintenance, labor, and spare parts for 3 years or 60,000 km.

‘GR Roadside Services’ is a five-year emergency assistance service. As for ‘GR Experience’, it is the right to train for the Toyota Gazoo Racing Academy Thailand course and participate in driving activities at the world-class Chang International Circuit.

With the GR Yaris being previously sold in Malaysia, one could expect the GR Corolla to also be offered, also in very limited numbers. The GR Yaris was sold for RM299,000 (with SST), and RM286,896 (without SST). Do expect the GR Corolla to cost more should it enter the Malaysian market.
