Following the surprise announcement by the Ministry of Finance to extend the sales tax exemptions period, which is now in effect until the 30th of June 2021, UMW Toyota has now released the new pricing information for the GR Yaris, now priced at RM286,896 – on the road, without insurance, and inclusive of the sales tax exemptions.

Launched in December last year, the pricing released during its local debut was inclusive of the full 10% sales tax applicable on the car, as deliveries will only begin in 2021. However, the imported Toyota GR Yaris is eligible for a 50% discount on sales tax (i.e. 5%) as per the government’s last-minute directive.

As a result, the Toyota GR Yaris is now priced RM12,104 lower than its original retail price. The new RM287k price will be valid until the 30th of June 2021, or until stocks last – so if you want one of these pocket rocket, you’d have to act quick as only 127 units will be made available from UMW Toyota here in Malaysia; supposedly, only 25,000 of the homologation special will ever be built worldwide.

The Toyota GR Yaris packs a 1.6-litre three-cylinder turbocharged underneath the bonnet, but not just any three-cylinder – it’s the most powerful production three-banger in the world. The little mill makes 261 hp and 360 Nm of torque, with power sent to all four wheels exclusively via a six-speed manual transmission and the GR-Four all-wheel drive system.

The Gazoo Racing family in Malaysia.

The GR Yaris’s all-wheel drive wizardry can be configured in three different modes – Normal, Sport and Track. In Normal mode, torque is split 60:40, 30:70 in Sport mode, and while in Track mode, torque split is a perfectly balanced 50:50 distribution – and you can change all of these at a whim with a twist of a knob.

The Malaysian GR Yaris also comes as standard with the Performance Pack, which includes Torsen mechanical limited-slip differential on both axles, 18-inch BBS wheels wrapped in sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, retuned dampers, retuned power steering, and red GR brake calipers for some added flair.
