Video: Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 review – 408hp for only RM262k

Spearheading Volvo’s pure-electric lineup in Malaysia is the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8. Locally assembled in Shah Alam and boasting an all-electric range of 418km (WLTP), the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 fetches a price of RM262,460.

It was launched in the Malaysian market in April 2022 and was sold out two months later in June 2022. Differentiating the fully electric P8 from the hybrid T5 is the blocked-out front grille and the lack of an exhaust system.

Powering the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 is a twin-motor electric drivetrain that sends power to all wheels. The system produces a maximum output of 408 hp and 660 Nm, recording a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.9 seconds. What is it like to drive? Well, you’d have to watch the video and let GC tell you what he thinks.

Supplying power to both electric motors is a 78-kWh battery back, which is quite large for a car its size. However, since the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 is an all-wheel drive (AWD), the all-electric range is 418 km (WLTP), less than what a two-wheel drive system would have obtained. There is a two-wheel drive version of the pure electric Volvo XC40 recharge with a 69-kWh battery that provides a 425-km range (WLTP), but it is not offered in Malaysia.

As for charging, the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 is capable of 150-kW DC fast charging and 11-kW AC charging. With 150-kW DC fast charging, the XC40 Recharge P8 can charge from 0 to 80% in just 40 minutes. With 11-kW AC charging, it takes 8 hours and 15 minutes to charge from 0 to 100%.

Priced at RM 262,460, the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 comes with a five-year warranty and free service package, an eight-year battery warranty, five-year roadside assistance package, as well as an included charging cable.
