Proton sold 14,872 cars in September – X50 & X70 lead B & C SUV segment

Stepping into Q4 2022, local carmaker Proton has just recorded a total of 14,872 cars registered for the month of September (domestic sales and exports). From January to September 2022, Proton successfully registered 102,353 cars.

For September, Proton managed to secure a 23.8% market share from an estimated total industry volume (TIV) of 62,500 units. For the first time in 2022, Proton has exceeded 20% in terms of the year-to-date market share at 20.1%.

Proton Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Roslan Abdullah said, “Proton’s Q3 performance was our best quarter of the year, coming in with 42,229 units for the previous three months. This was made possible by a combination of stability in our production numbers as well as the continued strong appeal of our models, especially for the 2022 Proton Saga and the Proton X50. Therefore, despite the poor start to the year, we are confident of achieving a fourth consecutive year of double-digit sales growth.”

“Aside from concentrating on sales growth, the last quarter also saw us laying the groundwork for our future growth. The General Distributorship Agreement with smart sets us up to sell EVs from the brand starting in 2023 while the formation of PRO-NET crystalises Proton’s commitment to developing and offering new energy vehicles in the future.”

Leading Proton’s sales chart for the month of September is the Proton Saga with 6,442 units registered. Following behind the Saga is the X50 with 4,517 units, the X70 with 1,730 units, the Persona with 1,159 units, the Iriz with 606 units, and the Exora with 418 units. For September, the X70 leads the C-segment SUV market and the X50 leads the B-segment SUV market.

The same ranking order is seen in the year-to-date sales (January to September) with 40,603 units of the Saga, 29,592 units of the X50, 14,145 units of the X70, 10,787 units of the Persona, 4,119 units of the Iriz, and 3,108 units of the Exora.

Proton says the strong demand for its cars has also boosted the growth of its finance subsidiary, Proton Commerce. In September alone, Proton Commerce disbursed 2,872 loans, resulting in a total 15,504 loans disbursed so far this year.

The Proton Deputy CEO said, “With the OPR increasing by 75bps this year, customers are actively searching for the best packages available to finance their new car purchases. As the preferred financier for Proton vehicles, Proton Commerce offers a range of innovative deals including the lowest rates for Proton Saga buyers as well as low monthly income requirements. These moves have proven to be effective, so we are expecting more growth in Q4 this year.”
