Real Toyota Supra enthusiasts drive three pedals? Toyota confirms manual transmission of its icon

It was a real surprise when news broke out that Toyota was going to bring the Supra back when the FT-1 Concept was revealed at the 2014 North American International Motor Show.

Unfortunately, the A90 Supra screamed “BMW Z4” everywhere you look, whether inside or the engine bay, and that didn’t seem to sit well with Supra enthusiasts and Toyota loyalists (online at least), even though most could never afford one anyways.

Now, in what seems like an effort to give the bump up Supra’s social status, Toyota has confirmed that a manual transmission for the Supra is ‘coming soon’ with no definitive timeline mentioned.

The press release said, “Toyota GR Supra with an all-new, tailor-made manual transmission is coming soon.”

Without revealing further, Toyota also said the Supra badge will be finished in Red to “signify the presence of a manual transmission – a highly desirable, pure and special feature.”

BMW has mentioned that there is a 6-speed manual gearbox for the BMW Z4 – what the Supra the based on – specifically for the sDrive20i but we’ll just have to wait and see on that!
