Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) unveiled its new sports coupe concept, the Toyota FT-1 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, US. Toyota did a good job keeping the concept a secret right until its debut and wowed the crowd at the motor show. Could this fantastic looking front engine, rear-wheel drive sports car be the new Toyota Supra? It looks future-tastic!

The Japanese auto giant made the Toyota FT-1 to show the world the direction of Toyota’s future sports car design. Hence the ‘FT’ stand for ‘Future Toyota’. The team responsible for the design at Calty Design Research, Inc. (Calty), Toyota’s design center in California, was heavily influenced by Toyota’s sports car past such as the 2000 GT, Celica and Supra. For us, it does look like the FT-1 is a combination of all great super cars; LaFerrari, Nissan GT-R, SRT Viper, McLaren P1? What else?

Kevin Hunter, President of Toyota’s CALTY design said the aim was to produce a car liked by everyone, and at the same time stirs emotion. He described the FT-1 a symbolic new chapter for Toyota design. “This car is a symbol of Toyota’s design future. Toyota CEO Akia Toyoda challenged us to design a car that said ‘I want this. I have to have this.’ The result is the FT-1,” said Hunter.

No words Toyota FT-1 Concepton what’s going under the clear hood but it’s definitely not a hybrid as confirmed by Toyota. It will be a ‘high-output’ internal combustion engine. Let us all hold hands and pray, that this will be the new Supra. Please please please.

A virtual Toyota FT-1 was created in collaboration with Play Station’s Gran Turismo. In fact, this new concept was built and tested in the video game by CEO Akio Toyoda. He managed to beat the time he set in his real-life Lexus LFA at Fuji Speedway, in the virtual FT-1. He gave the thumbs up and the project took off. The Toyota FT-1 is now available to download in GT6. Let’s do it!
