Kia EV6 named 2022 European Car of the Year

Following months of deliberation by 61 motoring journalists from 23 European countries, the panel has decided to award the fully-electric Kia EV6 with the 2022 Car of the Year award at the European Car of the Year (COTY) awards.

The Kia EV6 beat the Hyundai IONIQ 5, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Skoda Enyaq iV, Cupra Born, Renault Mégane E-Tech and Peugeot 308 to take the title.

Kia Europe, President, Jason Jeong said, “It’s the first-ever Kia to win this prestigious award. The EV6 is an exciting sign of what’s still to come in our evolving electrified line-up.”

It’s not the first award the Kia EV6 has won as it has also been awarded the Irish Car of the Year and recognised at the German Car of the Year awards.

The EV6 is Kia’s first dedicated EV and is not created on platforms initially designed for internal combustion engines. The EV6 can travel up to 528 km (in the GT variant) on a single charge and takes just 18 minutes to charge the batteries from 10 to 80%.

The 800-volt system takes just four and a half (4.5 minutes) of charging to get 100 km of range. There are all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive models, with the former capable of hitting 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds!

Interestingly, the Kia EV6 can also double up as a power bank using a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function. It’s capable of powering a 55-inch TV and air conditioner simultaneously for more than 24 hours. Kia also said the V2L system can be used to charge another EV!
