The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition 550 is the epitome of “sheep in wolf’s clothing”

Mercedes-Benz has revealed images of a new special-edition G-Class model, dubbed “Edition 550”. While that’s not all that surprising, given the incredible demand for the luxury off-roader from the footballers and movie stars around the world, this one here has got us scratching our heads a little bit.

You see, on the outside, the Edition 550 Gelandewagen has been given a slight makeover to toughen it up particularly with the addition of a gloss black bull bar in front. The blacked-out treatment also extends to the bumpers, wheels, and trims all around the exterior to give it some extra oomph, and contrasts nicely with the three high-end Manufaktur paint jobs offered here: Jupiter Red, Arabian Grey, and Moonlight White.

And as if that’s not enough, the special edition badging for the Edition 550 even features the silhouette of a G-Class climbing a mountain, telling the world that: “Yes, this is a proper off-roading beast. Watch out.”

Nothing out of the ordinary so far, but it’s when you open the doors and step into the cabin that you’ll realise just how different it is compared to the outside.

In stark contrast to the “tough and rough” exterior, Mercedes-Benz has given the G-Class Edition 550 an extra luxurious interior, decked out in two-tone Nappa leather with diamond stitching, plus new Active Multicontour Seats and carbon fibre trims on the inside.

The only photo of the interior here shows off a two-tone white and black upholstery colour combo which, as we all know, will never be chosen by an actual offroad driver – so we can only assume that the reason for the colour choice is to scream “I’m rich”, which makes sense because the passenger grab handle on the dashboard even says “1 of 200” to let them know you’re driving a special car.

Mercedes-Benz did not reveal much about the car’s specifications aside from these photos, but we do know that the ‘550’ in its name is from the car’s G 550 underpinnings, which means there’s a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 engine underneath the bonnet making 415 hp and 610 Nm of torque.
