Facts & Figures: 2021 Suzuki Jimny launched in Malaysia – RM169k

As expected after a short teaser campaign on social media pages, Naza Eastern Motors, the current distributor of Suzuki cars in Malaysia, has just launched the new Suzuki Jimny 1.5.

Fully imported (CBU) from Suzuki Kosai Plant in Japan, the Suzuki Jimny is priced from RM168,900 on-the-road without insurance and inclusive of ongoing SST exemption.

EXTERIOR

Measuring just 3.65 m in length (inclusive of the spare wheel) and 1.65 m in width even in this wide-fender “Sierra” exterior, the three-door Suzuki Jimny is incredibly compact, even smaller than the recently launched Hyundai Casper 1.0. The Perodua Ativa looks like a mid-size SUV when parked next to the little Jimny.

Suzuki says the upright and thin A-pillars and the flat, clamshell bonnet allow great visibility when traversing on very rough terrain.

Key exterior features in the Suzuki Jimny include:

  • Auto on-off circular LED projector headlamps with washer
  • Squared-off bumpers in scratch-resistant material
  • Unpainted wheel ‘over fenders’
  • 15-inch alloy rim, 195/80R15 H/T tyres
  • Tailgate-mounted full-sized spare tyre

Apart from the signature Kinetic Yellow on offer, other colours available are Bluish Black Pearl, Jungle Green and Medium Grey.

INTERIOR

Similar to many previous generations, the new Suzuki Jimny only has space for four occupants. The compact interior offers the usual gadgets such as:

  • Fabric seats
  • Split-folding 50-50 rear seat
  • Multi-function leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise control switches
  • 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay connectivity
  • Automatic air-conditioning system
  • Passenger grip bar (horizontal)

The rear seats also fold fully flat with the quarter trim panels and seatbacks have been carefully designed to increase storage width. The backs of the rear seats and luggage room floor are coated with plastic for easy removal of dirt or stains.

PERFORMANCE

  • Engine: 1.5-litre four-cylinder, VVT
  • Transmission: Four-speed automatic
  • Drivetrain: Part-time 4WD with low-range transfer
  • Max power: 102 hp @ 6,000 rpm
  • Max torque: 130 Nm @ 4,000 rpm
  • Top speed: 140 km/h (limited)
  • Fuel consumption: 6.8L/100 km

The Suzuki Jimny in Malaysia follows the powertrain option offered to the rest of the world- a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine with outputs of 102 hp and 130 Nm of torque. In true SUV format, the powertrain is position longitudinally, driving the rear wheels by default.

Naza Eastern Motors restarted the Suzuki brand in Malaysia this year via the launch of the Swift Sport Turbo. More about the fan favourite here!

A four-speed automatic is tasked to performed gear shifting duties, with a part-time 4WD low-range transfer gearbox called 4×4 AllGrip Pro apportion the drive to the front wheels in 4H or 4L modes. Selection of the 4WD mode is done by a traditional lever directly connected to the transfer case rather than an electronic dial switch.

Apart from the 4WD system, the Jimny is built on a robust ladder frame and suspended via a 3-link full-width rigid axle on both the rear and front ends. Usage of the non-independent rigid axle allows maximum tyre contact to the loose and uneven terrain.

The ground clearance might sound modest at 210 mm, but the Suzuki Jimny with its short overhangs and wheelbase provide pick-up truck levels of obstacle clearance, such as ramp break-over angle of 28 degrees, an approach angle of 37 degrees and a departure angle of 49 degrees.

To further increase traction while having wheel slip, the Suzuki Jimny also comes with Electronic Brake Actuated Limited-Slip Differential (or Brake LSD), a feature again only found in pick-ups such as Toyota Hilux and Nissan Navara.

SAFETY

On the safety front, the Suzuki Jimny is only equipped with two airbags. The three-door SUV also comes equipped with other safety features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill Hold Control, Hill Descent Control, side-impact door beams, ISOFIX child seat tethers and a decoupling mechanism for the brake pedal during impact.
