UMW Toyota teases updated GR Supra – Malaysia launch imminent?

Through a video titled “Supra Improvement Video” uploaded onto the company’s Facebook page, UMW Toyota has now officially teased the updated GR Supra, hinting at the imminent debut of the highly-acclaimed sports car here in Malaysia.

The video features a stopwatch overlay which stops exactly at 4.1 seconds – suggesting at the century sprint time of the updated GR Supra, which is 0.2 seconds quicker than the official figure of the current model.

The video ends with the slogan “every second counts”, along with an accompanying caption: “Keep your foot on the brakes Toyota fans. The Supra is warming up its engine for a huge surprise.”

Launched back in February this year, the new Toyota GR Supra features an uprated 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine, now producing 387 hp, up from the current 340 hp. Torque figure pretty much remains the same at 500 Nm, but the peak twisting force is now available all the way up to 5,000 rpm.

Over in the United States, Toyota quotes a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of 3.9 seconds on the updated Supra, which when extrapolated to 100 km/h should be roughly 4.1 seconds. However, through our own testing, the current Supra already produces nearer to the 370 hp mark, so expect the actual century sprint times to drop even further – we’ll definitely test it out when we get our hands on one!

Other improvements on the new Supra include new lightweight aluminium braces that for increased lateral rigidity, along with updated front and rear bump stopsnew damper tuning, as well as some software tuning to improve roll resistance and cornering stability especially during quick direction changes.

The American-spec Supra also gets an upgraded infotainment display and the addition of Toyota Supra Safety System – both of which already standard on our local variant. However, the updated GR Supra will also come with wireless Apple CarPlay, a feature currently still limited to only a handful of cars on the road.

Let’s just hope that the updated Toyota GR Supra will be launched here in Malaysia with the gorgeous Refraction Blue exterior colour as seen on the limited-edition “A91 Edition” Supra!
