Video: Volvo XC90 T5 7-seater SUV review

The Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Plus comes decked out in the highest trim level available from the Swedish marque, advanced driver assistance systems and a sophisticated hybrid system with 407 hp and 640 Nm of torque.

Coupled that with the attractive selling price of RM409k, it makes the RM373,888 Volvo XC90 T5 not that much of a bargain. But GC Mah thinks that Volvo’s entry-level 7-seater SUV still has its charm and appeal.

Powered by a simpler 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, it makes 254 hp and 350 Nm of torque in the T5 tune. An 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system allow the XC90 T5 to make the century sprint in 7.9 seconds with a top speed of 215 km/h. Pretty brisk for a two tonne SUV.

Despite losing on some trim pieces here and there, Volvo’s brilliant IntelliSafe Advanced Driver Assistance System and Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving assistant are still featured on the XC90 T5.

While some may argue to go for the T8 Inscription Plus trim for the mere RM36,000 price difference, others would appreciate the no-frills ownership experience (no need to charge the batteries, adapt to PHEV driving style) offered by the no less good looking XC90 T5.
