UMW Toyota Motor, the official distributor of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia has announced that their next product launch will be the all-new Toyota Yaris, essentially the hatchback version of the Vios.

It will be locally assembled at UMWT’s plant in Bukit Raja, Klang where the Vios is currently being built. The company did not reveal specification details of the upcoming hatchback but expect the Yaris to follow the specification of the Vios.

Our local spec Yaris is expected to use the same 2NR-VE 1.5-litre Dual VVT-i engine and CVT combo packing 107 hp and 140 Nm of torque to drive the front wheels. Seven airbags and Vehicle Stability Control should be standard across the Yaris range.

If UMWT hopes to compete with the Honda Jazz, the Yaris’ pricing should not stray too far from the Honda’s RM70k to RM83k range. Question is, would you go pick the Yaris over the Jazz?
