Ineos Automotive reportedly in talks with Chery’s iCaur to develop hybrid off-roader

Ineos Automotive, a UK-based off-road vehicle maker, is reportedly in talks for a possible collaboration with iCaur to build range-extended electric vehicles (REEV), utilising platforms from the Chery sub-brand, Autocar reports.

If this collaboration goes through, it would accelerate the development of Ineos’s postponed Fusilier REx off-roader, which is slated to be the second model in its line-up following the Ineos Grenadier.

Ineos Grenadier

The Grenadier is notably designed to resemble the previous Land Rover Defender and is powered by a BMW-derived powertrain. According to Autocar, the Fusilier’s launch will be crucial for Ineos as it will introduce a low-carbon emission model, enabling the carmaker to comply with strict emission regulations in the UK and the European Union.

Ineos is reportedly eyeing the upcoming iCaur V27 as the basis for its Fusilier. The V27 is reportedly set to feature a range-extender-style series hybrid powertrain with a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine as a generator to charge the onboard battery pack, which is either a 22 kWh or a 33 kWh unit.

Combined power output is reported to be 449 hp, with an all-wheel drive (AWD) drivetrain, according to the publication, citing iCaur.

iCaur’s CEO, Su Jun has released the first official photo of the iCaur V27 in China, albeit heavily dressed up in camouflage, with the car earning the nickname of the “Chinese G-Class” or the “NEV Land Cruiser”.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the iCaur V27 is expected to be launched in its home country in Q4 2025, and will have a pure electric (EV) range of 200 km under CLTC conditions.

The iCaur V27 will also reportedly be offered in both rear-wheel drive (RWD) or AWD variants, with pricing estimated between RMB200,000 (approx. RM118k) to RMB250,000 (approx. RM148k) when it’s launched in China later this year.

Closer to home, iCaur is gearing up to launch the fully electric iCaur 03 in Malaysia with the marque previewing the EV off-roader at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025.

Slated to launch in Malaysia with an approximate price of RM145,000 to RM155,000, the iCaur 03 will offer two variants, in both rear-wheel (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations. The former makes 184 hp and 220 Nm from its rear-mounted electric motor. This allows the RWD iCaur 03 to do 0-100 km/h in 10.5 seconds.

Paired to a 65.7 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, the RWD iCaur 03 has a range of 426 km (NEDC), and supports 6.6 kW of AC charging as well as 80 kW of DC charging.

For the AWD variant, it gains a front-mounted electric motor producing a combined output of 279 hp and 385 Nm, which enables a 0-100 km/h time of 6.5 seconds. Despite being equipped with a larger 69.8 kWh LFP battery pack, the range of the AWD variant is lower at 418 km (NEDC).
