XPeng X9 updated for 2025 with bigger batteries and Rolls-Royce-style hubcaps

XPeng has unveiled an updated 2025 XPeng X9 in Hong Kong, coinciding with the carmaker’s first Global Brand Night held outside Mainland China. The refreshed fully electric (EV) MPV will be available in China with four variants priced from CNY359,800 (approx. RM217k), unchanged from before.

  • XPeng X9 Long Range Max – CNY359,800 (approx. RM217k)
  • XPeng X9 Ultra Long Range – CNY379,800 (approx. RM229k)
  • XPeng X9 AWD Performance Max -CNY399,800 (approx. RM241k)
  • XPeng X9 Starship Edition – CNY419,800 (approx. RM253k)

Subtle changes differentiate the refreshed XPeng X9 from its pre-“facelift” guise, despite their similarity at first glance. For example, the front bumper’s cutouts now gain a decorative trim, and the XPeng script at the rear is now illuminated above the LED light strip.

A key update is the redesigned 20-inch alloy wheels, now incorporating self-centering hubcaps like those on a Rolls-Royce. This feature, however, is currently reserved for X9’s sold in Mainland China. Right-hand drive (RHD) models like those in Hong Kong supposedly have to make do with the older alloy wheel design – or at least that’s what the display car suggests.

Inside, the fridge compartment door, previously made of hard plastic, now uses soft-touch materials. The middle-row zero-gravity seats have also been redesigned to allow passengers to walk between them for third-row access, a feature absent in the pre-facelift model.

However, the RHD XPeng X9 omits new features such as soft-closing front doors, ISOFIX mounts for both outer third-row seats, and physical window switches for the middle row, instead retaining the previous touch-sensitive control panel.

Standard equipment otherwise include rear-wheel steering, alongside dual-chamber air suspension with new AI-optimised “6D comfort” algorithm, designed to minimise the X9’s body pitch and roll. Additional standard features include a 220V power outlet, one-touch electric folding third-row seats, and the company’s AI-based Turing ADAS system, are now standard across all variants.

The XPeng X9 is available as a front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) MPV in China. FWD variants are powered by an electric motor that makes 320 hp (235 kW) and 450 Nm. This translates to 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds. For the AWD variants, it gains a rear electric motor that makes 184 hp (135 kW) and 190 Nm for a combined output of 503 hp and 640 Nm. This shortens the century sprint to 5.7 seconds.

The big update here comes in the form of bigger battery capacities. XPeng X9 buyers in China can choose between a 94.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, providing a range of 650 km (CLTC), or an even larger 105 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery. The latter, increased from 101.5 kWh, boosts the range to 740 km (CLTC) for FWD variants and 702 km (CLTC) for AWD variants.

In Malaysia, the XPeng X9 is currently sold in its pre-update guise, priced from RM270,708. Three variants are available on offer, all of them are front-wheel drive only:

  • Xpeng X9 Standard Range 2WD Pro – RM270,708
  • Xpeng X9 Long Range 2WD Pro – RM288,708
  • Xpeng X9 Long Range 2WD Pro Plus – RM300,708

The XPeng X9 shares its 320 hp and 450 Nm powertrain with the Mainland China FWD variants. Battery pack options include an 84.5 kWh LFP battery pack that enables a WLTP range of 500 km, and a 101.5 kWh NMC battery pack that increases the range to 590 km (WLTP).

Charging is supported with AC charging at 11 kW for all three variants. The base Standard Range 2WD Pro variant supports DC charging at 283 kW, whereas the Long Range 2WD Pro and Long Range 2WD Pro Plus support faster DC charging speed at 317 kW. All three variants with DC charging take 20 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%.

Given that the XPeng X9 was just launched in Malaysia last month, we don’t expect the updated model to hit our shores in the immediate future. That said, the model sold in Malaysia is still built in China, and stranger things have definitely happened…
