Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) has announced the release of the Volvo EC40, previously known as the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric. The Volvo EC40 is available in a single variant, the Volvo EC40 Ultra, priced at RM288,888 on-the-road, without insurance.
Essentially the same car as the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, the new Volvo EC40 retains the same exterior, including the refreshed fog light cluster and signature Thor’s Hammer headlights. A new exterior colour, Cloud Blue, has been added to the palette, joining Crystal White, Onyx Black, Sage Green and Silver Dawn.
Powering the Volvo EC40 in Malaysia is also an unchanged dual-motor setup delivering 408 hp (300 kW) and 670 Nm. 0-100 km/h takes 4.7 seconds, onwards to a top speed of 180 km/h. But while the onboard 82 kWh battery is the same size as before, range has increased marginally from 550 km to now 554 km (WLTP).
Charging is supported by AC charging at 11 kW and DC charging at a rate of 200 kW, the latter enabling the Volvo EC40 to recharge from 10% – 80% in 28 minutes.
The compact fully electric crossover was last updated in 2024, which brought along the larger 82 kWh battery pack as well as the faster DC charging rates.
Alongside the EC40, the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric has also been renamed as the EX40 globally, in a move to streamline its EV naming scheme by dispensing the ‘Recharge Pure Electric’ suffix. However, this change has not been introduced in Malaysia yet.

The infotainment system in the Volvo EC40 is powered by the Android Automotive infotainment system, although this should be updated with the new-generation Volvo Car UX through an over-the-air software update. It is unclear, however, if the model here in Malaysia will come equipped with the latest Snapdragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm – a change that was announced globally earlier this year.
The Volvo EC40 is available in a single variant and is priced at RM288,888. Included in the price is a five-year complimentary Volvo service plan (VSP) and five years of complimentary digital services, offering seamless access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Play Store, and remote functions via the Volvo Cars App.
Customers who book the Volvo EC40 from now till 31 March 2025 will also enjoy a complimentary wall box charger voucher worth RM5,000.
