The MG3 Hybrid+ could spice up Malaysia’s B-segment market with its 194 hp and 313 Nm of torque!

Following its international debut in March this year, SAIC Motor Malaysia has now previewed the MG3 Hybrid+ at KLIMS 2024, hinting at a launch here in the future. This B-segment hatchback might surprise you with its potent performance and impressive fuel efficiency.

Boasting 194 hp and a fuel economy of 26.2 km/l, the MG3 Hybrid+ could be a compelling contender if it were to launch in Malaysia, especially with the competitive B-segment hatchback market that’s currently occupied by local favourites such as the Perodua Myvi and the Honda City Hatchback.

Like its stablemates, such as the MG5, the MG3 Hybrid+ sports a distinctive grille, thanks to its wide openings and sculpted side air intakes. The car rides on stylish 16-inch alloy wheels and together with what MG calls “Hunting-eyes” headlights, the MG3 Hybrid+ certainly looks sporty and aggressive.

The rest of the exterior design is typical for a hatchback of its class, with the rear design drawing some cues from the Honda City Hatchback in its taillight profile and bumper design.

Inside, the MG3 Hybrid+ boasts a modern and minimalist interior, featuring dual floating screens. A 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the driver benefits from a seven-inch digital gauge cluster.

Under the bonnet of the MG3 Hybrid+, you’ll find a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine paired with an electric motor for a total output of 194 hp and 313 Nm. This powertrain drives the front wheels through a three-speed hybrid transmission.

This impressive output surpasses the Honda City RS e:HEV, which offers 109 hp and an infamous 253 Nm. Although the MG3 Hybrid+ has a slightly lower rated fuel economy of 26.2 km/l (3.8 l/100 km) compared to the Honda’s 27.2 km/l (3.7 l/100 km), it’s still remarkable for a small hatchback packing this much power.

Launched in Thailand with two variants priced between THB579,900 and THB619,900 (approx. RM75K and RM80K), the MG3 Hybrid+ is equipped with a comprehensive suite of ADAS features for the top variant, including:

  • Adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist (ACC)
  • Blind spot monitors (BSM)
  • Lane keep assist (LKA)

Seeing that SAIC Motors is previewing the MG3 Hybrid+ in Malaysia during KLIMS 2024, the company might be testing the waters before deciding to launch it here. With the current B-segment hybrid market occupied only by the Honda City e:HEV and the recently launched Nissan Kicks e-Power, more options for consumers would certainly be welcome.
