All-new 2024 Toyota Camry makes ASEAN debut in Singapore as hybrid-only model

The ninth-generation XV80 2024 Toyota Camry has made its ASEAN regional debut in Singapore, nine months after the model was first unveiled globally in November last year. The Japanese D-segment executive sedan is only offered in a single ‘Elegance’ variant in the island nation, priced at SGD246,888 (approx. RM822k) inclusive of COE.

Like the US, the all-new 2024 Toyota Camry is also offered exclusively with a hybrid powertrain over in Singapore, featuring a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol engine (188 hp, 221 Nm), paired to a single electric motor (136 hp, 208 Nm) for a total system output of 231 hp – all of which sent to the front wheels only.

The hybrid powertrain, which also consists of an electronic CVT and a small lithium-ion battery, is capable of delivering a fuel consumption rating of 5.1 l/100km, and CO2 emissions of just 115 g/km, which means it’s eligible for the A2 banding in the country’s Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES), netting owners a SGD15,000 rebate.

Standard equipment for the 2024 Toyota Camry in Singapore includes LED headlamps and daytime-running lights (DRLs), LED fog lamps, LED tail lights, 18-inch wheels, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a nine-speaker JBL sound system, head-up display, eight-way powered front seats with ventilation function, leather upholstery, three-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof.

Further adding to the premium experience is the additional touch-activated control panel in the rear seats’ centre armrest, which lets the “tauke” control the powered rear seat recliners, climate settings, rear sunshade, and audio settings all without lifting much more than just a finger.

In keeping up with the times, the all-new 2024 Toyota Camry in Singapore also comes equipped with a voice assistant system, a wireless charging pad, and a whole host of advanced driver assistance features including autonomous emergency braking with parking support, adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist and lane departure alert, blind spot monitor, traffic sign recognition, as well as a 360-degree surround view monitor.

As part of the redesign, the ninth-generation Toyota Camry now also sports the brand’s new “hammerhead” front fascia that was first introduced on the Toyota Crown in 2022. The C-shape motif is repeated throughout the exterior, including on the DRLs as well as the tail lights, while a significant focus was placed on the car’s aerodynamics, incorporating several functional air ducts and canards into the design.

While the sleek overall silhouette has remained roughly unchanged, the all-new ninth-generation Toyota Camry has actually grown by 35 mm (with other dimensions retained), resulting in a slight increase in boot space up to 500 litres.

Intriguingly, the Chinese-market XV80 Toyota Camry does differ in design to the one first unveiled in the United States last year, with the main distinction being the interior dashboard design. The Singapore-spec car, with its more traditional button-styled climate control panel, seems to be in-line with the US-spec car, though it’s unclear if other markets in the region will follow suit.

Closer to home, the eight-generation XV70 Toyota Camry is currently still on sale here in Malaysia, with the last update being a facelift back in February 2022. Only time will tell if the all-new 2024 model will make an introduction here, although with the Honda Accord now being discontinued in Malaysia, one could say it’s free real estate for the Camry…
